Chapter 479
“It’s a little funny,” I disagreed. “They spent weeks planning, probably. Recruited infiltrators, studied your security systems, coordinated this whole rescue operation. And Lake just opened some portals and completely ruined their entire plan in about thirty seconds.
“The infiltrators were very surprised,” Thorne added, a smile tugging at his lips despite the serious situation. “One of them actually asked if we’d planned for a five-year-old to be our backup security system.”
“What did you say?” I asked.
“I said yes, obviously, because we’re the Blackwood pack and tactical innovation is our specialty.”
Now Lumina was trying not to smile too. Even Xenois’s anger was being undermined by the absurdity of the situation.
“So let me get this straight,” Xenois said slowly. “Someone attacked our pack house with a sophisticated plan to free Lazarus. They disabled all our electrical systems. They had inside knowledge suggesting a traitor in our ranks. And the situation was resolved by my second-in-command and my five-year-old son using improvised solar portals.”
“That’s an accurate summary, Thorne confirmed.
“And everyone’s actually okay? No injuries?”
“No injuries. The three infiltrators are in custody. Lazarus is still secured. Security has been upgraded to include battery-powered UV systems that don’t rely on main power. We’re investigating who provided inside information to Jerome’s people.”
Xenois sat back down, running his hands through his hair. “I can’t believe I missed this.”
“You didn’t miss it, I corrected. “You were taking necessary time with your mate while your capable second-in-command handled an emergency. That’s what delegation looks like.
*Zade’s right,” Lumina said. “Thorne managed the situation perfectly. You being there wouldn’t have changed the outcome-except you’d be more exhausted and stressed right now instead of refreshed.”
“I should have been reachable,” Xenois insisted.
“Why?” I challenged. “So you could rush back and handle something Thorne already had under control? So you could deprive yourself of rest you desperately needed? That’s not leadership, that’s martyrdom.”
“It’s my responsibility-”
“To build a pack that can function even when you’re not immediately available,” I interrupted. “Xenois, you’re a brilliant alpha. But you’re also a control freak who thinks everything requires your personal attention. Last night proved that’s not true. Your pack handled a crisis without you. They kept everyone safe. They even captured the attackers. That’s success, not failure.”

Xenois looked at Thorne. “You really had everything under control?’
“I really did,” Thorne confirmed. “Though I won’t lle-having Lake show up with portal-based UV lighting was unexpected and incredibly helpful.”
“Where did he learn to do that?” Lumina asked.
“Apparently he and Riley have been practicing tactical applications of his abilities,” Thorne said. “They have a whole system worked out for various emergencies.”
“Of course they do,” Xenois muttered. ‘My five-year-olds have emergency response protocols.”
“Your five-year-olds are brilliant and powerful,” I said. “Be glad they’re using those abilities constructively instead of, say, portaling to restricted locations just to see if they can.”
“Have they done that?” Xenois asked suspiciously.
“Not that I know of,” I said. “But Lake definitely could if he wanted to. The fact that he hasn’t suggests good judgment.”
Lyn appeared through the portal at that moment, probably sensing through our mate bond that something interesting was happening. He took one look at the assembled group and smiled.
