Chapter 482
‘That wouldn’t be normal for us, Riley said. “Normal is subjective. Our normal includes portal abilities and precognition and security protocols. Wishing for a different normal is pointless. Better to optimize the normal we have.”
‘That’s a very Riley answer, Ollie observed.
“It’s a logical answer, Riley defended. “We can’t change what we are or what we’ve experienced. We can only choose how we respond to current circumstances.”
Dad appeared in the doorway then, looking tired but less stressed than he had been lately. The alone time with Mom had helped. I could tell because he was smiling instead of having that tight expression he got when he was worried about everything.
“Morning, boys,” he said, moving to the coffee maker. “How are you feeling after yesterday?”
“Good, we all said, maybe a little too quickly.
Dad studied us with that look that said he knew we were downplaying things. “Lake, can we talk? Just us?”
My stomach did a nervous flip. “Am I in trouble?”
“No, Dad said immediately. “You’re not in trouble. I just want to check in. Make sure you’re really okay after everything that happened.”
“Okay, I agreed, following him to his office.
The office was big and had lots of books and papers everywhere. Usually it felt overwhelming, but today it just felt safe. Like a place where important
things got discussed but also where Dad could focus just on me instead of on being alpha.
“Sit, Dad said, gesturing to the couch. He sat beside me instead of behind his desk, which meant this was a dad conversation, not an alpha
conversation.
“Thorne told me what you did last night, Dad said. “With the portals and the UV light. That was incredibly brave and smart.”
‘I was scared, I admitted again.
“Being brave doesn’t mean not being scared, Dad said. ‘It means doing what needs to be done even when you are scared. You heard people in danger
and you helped them. That’s courage, Lake.”
“But what if I’d messed up?” I asked. “What if my portals hadn’t worked or I’d gotten the angle wrong or-
“But you didn’t mess up,’ Dad interrupted gently. “You succeeded. And I know it’s easy to focus on all the things that could have gone wrong, but what actually matters is what did happen. You saved people. You kept everyone safe. That’s what counts.”
I leaned against him, feeling some of the tension I’d been carrying since yesterday start to ease. “I didn’t want anyone to get hurt.
‘I know, Dad said, wrapping his arm around me. And because of you, no one did get hurt. I’m so proud of you, Lake. Not just for being powerful, but for choosing to use that power to protect people.”
‘Riley says we should have better security protocols,” I said. For next time.”

‘Riley’s probably right,’ Dad agreed. Though I’m hoping there won’t be a next time. But if there is, yes, we should make sure you and your brothers know what to do.
“Are we in trouble for not calling you?” I asked. “You were supposed to be having alone time with Mom.”
“You’re not in trouble, Dad assured me. “Thorne handled things correctly. And honestly, Lake, I’m realizing that part of being alpha means trusting other people to handle emergencies when I’m not available. Last night proved my pack can do that.”
“But you’re still the alpha,’ I said. “You’re still in charge.”
‘I am, he agreed. “But being in charge doesn’t mean doing everything myself. It means building a pack strong enough to function even when I’m not there. You, Riley, Ollie-you’re part of that strength. And I need to trust you to use your abilities when necessary.”
time.
That made me feel better. Like maybe I wasn’t being bad by helping without permission. Like maybe it was okay to be powerful and five at the same
‘Uncle Thorne says we’re going to be junior security advisors,” I said.
“He told you about that already?” Dad asked.
‘Riley overheard,” I admitted. “And told us. Are we really going to help with security?”
“In an age-appropriate way,” Dad said carefully. “You’ll attend some briefings, learn proper protocols, maybe help identify vulnerabilities in our defenses. But you won’t be put in dangerous situations deliberately. Deal?”
“Deal, I agreed.
