Chapter 485
XENOIS
I stood outside the holding cells, staring at the reinforced door and trying to reconcile what I was about to do with the progressive leader I’d been
trying to become.
Beside me, Thorne waited silently. He knew what was coming. Had probably been expecting this since the moment we’d captured Jerome’s infiltrators.
‘You don’t have to do this,” he said quietly. “Zade offered to handle interrogations. He has experience with this kind of thing.”
“This is my pack,” I said. “My family that was threatened. My responsibility to handle.
“Torture isn’t-”
“I know what torture is,” I interrupted. “My parents taught me extensively. Along with every other brutal tactic necessary for pack leadership during
wartime.
Thorne was quiet for a moment. “You’ve spent months building a reputation as a progressive alpha. Someone who doesn’t use the old methods. If you do this-if you torture prisoners-it undermines everything you’ve worked for.”
“Good,” I said flatly. “Because apparently being progressive makes people think I’m weak. Makes them think they can attack my pack house, threaten my
children, and face no real consequences.”
I looked at him directly. “Last night, someone invaded our home while I was away. They sabotaged our security systems with inside information from a traitor. They came for Lazarus, but they also endangered everyone in that house. Including three five-year-old children who had to defend themselves
because adults failed to stop the threat before it reached them.”
“We did stop it, Thorne protested.
“After Lake had to improvise UV lighting using portal magic,” I said. “After my five-year-old son had to step into a combat situation because our security
wasn’t adequate. That’s unacceptable.”
I turned back to the door. ‘Jerome sent those people. He’s planning more attacks. He thinks we’re soft, that our progressive policies make us vulnerable.
I’m going to prove him wrong.”
“By becoming exactly what he accuses us of being?’ Thorne challenged. By using the same brutal methods traditionalists have always used?
“By doing whatever is necessary to protect my family,’ I corrected. “I’ve been playing by rules Jerome doesn’t respect. Being polite, offering prisoner
exchanges, treating captured enemies with dignity. And what has that gotten us? More attacks. More threats. More danger to people I love.
I pulled open the door. No more. They want the old Blackwood methods? The ones my parents used during the territorial wats? Eme. I’ll give them
exactly that.”
The holding area was cold and sterile. Three cells, each containing one of the infiltrators from last night. And at the end, separated by additional security measures, Lazarus’s cell.
All four prisoners looked up as I entered. The three infiltrators tried to maintain brave expressions. Lazarus just smiled, like he found the whole situation amusing.
‘Good morning,’ I said pleasantly. I hope you’ve been comfortable. Adequate food, clean facilities, no abuse from guards. We’ve been very civilized

about your imprisonment.”
The female infiltrator-the one who’d nearly freed Lazarus-met my eyes defiantly. ‘We have nothing to say to you.”
“I haven’t asked you anything yet, I pointed out. “But that’s going to change. You see, I’ve been thinking about my approach to prisoners. How I’ve been
treating captured enemies with respect, following established protocols, maintaining moral high ground.”
I moved closer to her cell. And then I realized something. That approach only works when your opponents share your values. When they respect the
same rules. Jerome doesn’t respect rules. He tortured my parents. He sent people to attack my home. He endangered my children.”
“We were following orders,” one of the male infiltrators said.
“I don’t care,” I said simply. “Following orders doesn’t absolve you of responsibility. You chose to participate in an attack on a house full of children. You
chose to sabotage security systems knowing it could result in deaths. Those were your choices.
I rolled up my sleeves slowly, deliberately. “Now you’re going to live with the conséquences of those choices.”
“You won’t hurt us,” the female infiltrator said, but I heard uncertainty in her voice. “You’re progressive. You don’t use the old methods.
“That’s where you’re wrong,” I said. “I am progressive about pack policies, about accepting non-traditional supernatural beings, about building coalitions
instead of enforcing dominance through violence. But I am also Samuel and Silvia Blackwood’s son. Trained by them. Taught by them. Raised to lead during
wartime using whatever methods necessary.”
I looked at Thorne. ‘Get the equipment.”
“Xenois- he started.
“Now,” I said, using alpha command.
He left, reluctance clear in every movement. But he obeyed.
I turned back to the prisoners. I’m going to ask you questions. You’re going to answer them. And every time you refuse, every time you be, every time
you waste my time-there will be consequences.”
“We won’t tell you anything, the female infiltrator said, trying to sound brave.
“We’ll see, I said.
Thome returned carrying a metal case. He set it down without meeting my eyes, clearly uncomfortable with what was about to happen
I opened the case, revealing the tools inside. Instruments my parents had shown me years ago, had explained the uses of, had made me practice with on training dummies so I’d understand exactly what they could do to a body.
I’d hoped never to use them for real. Had thought I could be a different kind of alpha, one who didn’t need these methods
But Jerome had made that impossible.
‘Last chance,” I said to the infiltrators. Tell me where Jerome is planning his next attack. Tell me who your inside contact is Tell me everything you know about his operations.”
Silence.

“Fine,” I said.
I opened the female infiltrator’s cell and pulled her out. She tried to fight, but I was stronger-alpha strength enhanced by rage and determination
I forced her down into a chair Thorne had positioned in the center of the room. Silver restraints, reinforced to hold supernatural strength.
