Chapter 514
XENOIS
I stood in our family room the next morning, watching my children settle into various seats, and wondered how exactly one explained cosmic debts and alternate timelines to a five-year-old.
Riley, Lake, and Ollie occupied the couch together, that unconscious closeness they’d developed since the facility rescue making them gravitate toward each other during stressful situations. Shawn sat in an armchair, his seventeen-year-old face already showing concern-he’d picked up that something significant was about to be discussed.
Lumina was beside me, her hand in mine, both of us drawing strength from the contact. My parents stood near the window, having insisted on being present for this conversation. Thorne positioned himself by the door, his second-in-command instincts making him want clear exit routes even in our own
home.
“Thank you all for coming,” I started, then immediately felt ridiculous. Like this was a business meeting instead of a family conversation about
impossible truths.
Dad, you’re using your alpha voice,” Ollie observed. “That means something scary is happening.”
“Not scary, I corrected, then reconsidered. “Okay, maybe a little scary. But important. Your mother and I need to tell you something. Something that
explains a lot about the past six months and why Mom had a heart attack yesterday.”
“Is Mom dying?” Lake asked bluntly, his five-year-old directness cutting through any attempt at gentle preamble.
“No, Lumina said firmly. “I’m not dying. At least, not right now. But there’s something you all need to understand about where I came from and what
might happen in the future.”
“Where you came from?” Shawn repeated, confused. “You mean like your family history or-
I mean from another timeline, Lumina said, just putting it out there. ‘Six months ago, from my perspective, I died. And then I was sent back to try
again.
The room went completely silent. Even Riley, who rarely showed surprise, looked startled.
“You died?” Ollie whispered. “But you’re here, You’re alive.”
“I’m alive now,” Lumina confirmed. “But in another version of events-in a timeline that no longer exists–I died. And so did you, Ollie.”
I felt her hand tremble in mine as she said those words. Watched our son’s face go pale as he processed what his mother had just revealed.
‘I died?’ Ollie asked, his voice small. “‘How?
Lumina knelt in front of him, taking his small hands in hers. “You got sick, baby. Your heart stopped working sight. And in that other timeline, we distie’t catch it in time. You collapsed in the town square and her voice broke slightly, and you died in my arms.
“That’s why you made me do all those medical tests, Ollie said slowly, comprehension dawning. When we first started having doctor appointments
every week. You were checking my heart.”
“Yes,” Lumina confirmed. Because in that other timeline, I’d ignored the warning signs too long. Thought you just had a cold or flu. By the time I
realized it was serious, it was too late.”

“But you saved me this time, Ollie said. “By knowing what to look for.”
“I did.” Lumina agreed. “That’s what second chances are for-fixing the mistakes from the first try.”
Riley had gone very still, his precognitive abilities probably processing implications at computational speed. “The other timeline,” he said carefully.
“What else was different?”
Lumina looked at me, silently asking if I wanted to field this question. I nodded and turned to Riley.
