Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 67

Chapter 67

RILEY

“We’ll see about that,” Mr. Xenois chuckled, shaking his head like he was exasperated with Ollie but his voice was warm and happy. It was nothing like

the way Mom’s voice sounded when she was pretending to be happy.

As we drove through the street, heading towards their home, I pressed my face to the window and watched the houses get bigger and prettier as well as

my eyes were wide open with awe, as I kept looking even as we passed it by.

When we finally turned into the driveway of Ollie’s house, I felt my breath catch in my throat.

I’d been here before, just a few days ago when Mom had arranged that playdate thT she made me wear the glove to use and shake Ollie’s hand.

Before in the daytime with all the lights off, it seemed nice but normal like every house was.

Now it looked like something from a fairy tale, like a castle where good people lived happily all the time and bad things couldn’t happen here.

“Wow,” I breathed, not meaning to say it out loud as I covered my mouth wondering if I would get in trouble for speaking without permission.

‘Pretty cool, right?” Ollie grinned at me, as he bumped my shoulders with him gently and added with a gleam in his eyes.

“Wait until you see my room! I have a bunk bed and everything!”

When the car finally pulled up a stop, Ollie got out and dragged me out not waiting for his mum to help us.

Inside the house, Mrs. Lumina asked us what we wanted to eat for a snack, but I couldn’t make my mouth say anything to her as I was still overwhelmed

by how fast everything was changing.

Everything felt too big, too bright for me and very unfamiliar. The house smelled like cookies and something else that was warm and safe, and I didn’t

want to say the wrong thing and ruin it.

‘Riley’s probably just tired,” Ollie said, answering for me as usual as he grabbed my hand and tugged it gently.

“Come on, I’ll show you my room!”

He dragged me up the stairs, talking about all the things we could do during our sleepover and he seemed to never be running out of ideas.

His room was amazing, with toys everywhere and posters on the walls and that bunk bed he’d promised that he had. It was big and beautiful. But what I

liked most was how it felt lived-in and loved, like a real kid’s room where things happened.

*You can have the top bunk if you want,” Ollie offered generously as he pointed at it where I could see that there was a bed already made although it seemed to be only Ollie that was a kid. Or maybe it was for his cousins or something.

“Or we could both sleep on the bottom and pretend we’re in a fort.”

“Thanks,” I managed to say, though my voice came out smaller than I wanted as I looked around while he pulled me into his playroom, a much smaller room than the one in his grandfather’s room.

After a while, Mrs. Lumina called us for bath time as she looked at us eagerly as she said.

*Since there are two of you tonight, Daddy and I will both help so nobody drowns,” she said with a laugh.

But when we got to the bathroom and I saw the bathtub filled with water, everything inside me went cold and panicky. The water looked so deep, and for a second I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think about anything except being held under the water as punishment for-

‘Riley? Mrs. Lumina’s voice seemed to come from very far away pulling me from where my mind was spiraling.

“Sweetie, what’s wrong?”

I realized I was pressed against the bathroom wall, my whole body shaking in fear as I swallowed hard, remembering how I begged my Mama as she

pulled me under the water for failing.

Both Mr. Xenois and Mrs. Lumina was looking at me with worried faces, and Ollie was staring at me with wide eyes.

I’m sorry,” I whispered, looking at them though I wasn’t sure what I was apologizing for.
