Reborn From Regret A Second Chance at Luna’s Heart
Chapter 7
The early morning sunlight was pouring into the room, the curtains being light enough for the rays to pass through, casting golden
stripes across our bedroom.
I stirred, reaching for Luna beside me, but found her side of the bed empty and already cold.
It seemed like she had been up for a while.
It was strange. Luna was the kind of person who always slept in when she could.
The house seemed to be different too.
There was a warm scent in the air. It felt richer, warmer. Pancakes?
The scent of butter and maple syrup drifted up the stairs, as it woke me up completely from sleep.
My wolf moved for a moment inside me, oddly restless. Something felt… off.. I shook the feeling away and headed for the shower.
I stood under the cold shower which woke me up completely as I washed myself while my mind went astray thinking of the
responsibilities that had been thrust in my hands.
Alpha.
Mayor.
Father.
Lover.
I had so many roles to fill and not enough of me to go around.
I closed my eyes, picturing Sophia’s face when I promised to watch over Riley while she was away.
The way she looked relieved and the trust she had in me was something that I couldn’t forget.
The way her hand had lingered on mine longer than expected.
I shook my head spraying soap foams on the ground trying to get rid of that thought.
I shouldn’t think about her. Not here, not in the home I shared with Luna and Ollie.
But Sophia had always been able to get under my skin in ways I couldn’t explain, even to myself.
Her son, Riley, with his green eyes and quiet demeanor, had somehow made a home in my heart in a way that I hadn’t known existed.
“Goddammit,” I muttered, turning the water colder. I needed clarity today, not confusion. Not guilt.
Dressed halfway in my suit, I was wearing my pants and shirt with my tie hanging loose around my neck-I headed downstairs, trying
to prepare the excuse I’d give Luna for why I couldn’t stay for breakfast.
An early meeting. Some emergencies at the office. The same lies I’d been telling her for months now.
But when I entered the kitchen, what I saw made me freeze in my tracks.
Luna stood at the stove, flipping pancakes with practise. Her dark hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, and she wore simple
leggings and one of my old t-shirts.
It wasn’t a new scene but there was something about her posture, the careful way she moved, made me feel like there was something
that I was missing.
Like she had undergone a change in the night. She had gone from someone who looked weary and conflicted about my “works” that made me stay out too late, to someone who looked like she didn’t give a damn about anything.
Luna’s shoulder stiffened immediately and subtle. If I hadn’t been looking at her all this while, I would have missed it.
“I should take this,” I murmured, already heading toward the hallway.
Luna just nodded her head, not looking as she kept her eyes on the sink in front of her.
Once I got to my study where I could have some privacy, I answered.
“Sophia. Everything okay?”
“We’re about to board our flight,” her voice sounded warm and intimate in my ear.
“Just wanted to let you know we’ll be landing around two this afternoon.”
“I remember,” I leaned against my desk, as I continued speaking.
“Everything’s set for your return. I’ve increased patrols around your neighborhood, just to be safe.”
“And Riley’s medication? Did you pick it up from Dr. Mercer?” The worry in her tone seemed to awaken something possessive in me as
I nodded my head.
“It’s waiting at my office. I’ll bring It when I pick you up.” I lowered my voice, even though I knew Luna couldn’t hear me over the sound of running water in the kitchen.
“He’ll be fine, Soph. I promised I’d keep him safe, and I will.”
“I know.” Her voice softened. “That’s why I trust you, Xen. You’re the only one who understands what he needs.” A pause. “What we both need.”
I felt a brief arousal wash through me followed by a wave of shame.
This was dangerous territory, and we both knew it.
‘I’ll see you at two,” I said instead sounding more brisk than I intended. “Safe travels.”
