Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 72

Chapter 72

XENOIS

I woke up to the feeling of Lumina’s warm body that was pressed against mine, her head was placed on my chest and she had one arm draped across my stomach. For a moment, everything felt normal again, after the way she had been pulling from me ever since Sophia returned to Silver Creek with her son and even before then.

Right now it was just us, just the quiet intimacy of a Sunday morning and absolutely nowhere urgent to be.

Last night’s conversation in the shower and intimacy had cleared some of the air between us, but I could still sense that our bond was fragile. Lumina didn’t trust me completely but she was at least giving me a chance to rebuild our connection. Sophia’s return had shaken something important in our relationship, and we were both still finding our footing.

I pressed a gentle kiss to the top of Lumina’s head, breathing in the familiar scent of her shampoo mixed with her natural scent. I was so happy that I could scent her again, the scare earlier this week was something I didn’t want to go through. I had no idea what could have caused this or if she was even aware but I was going to bring it up with our family doctor tomorrow.

I didn’t want to lose the feeling that I had now. Lumina stirred against me, making that soft humming sound she always made when she was slowly waking up from sleep.

“Good morning, beautiful,” I murmured, my lips finding her temple as I pressed another kiss there and felt her little chuckle in response.

She tilted her face up to look at me, her eyes still heavy with sleep but warm with affection. “Good morning yourself, handsome.”

I cupped her face in my hands and kissed her properly, slow and deep, trying to pour all my love and affection into the kiss. She responded immediately, her body melting against mine as her hands reached up to get tangled in my hair.

The kiss got deeper, and I felt my little big man began to rise up as well in response to the situation. Twice in technically hours. It seemed that Lumina was allowing herself to fall for me.

I had always wondered if this was going to be an arranged marriage for the rest of our lives especially with the fact that my parents never forgave her for the death of my little sister. I had never told her that I loved her during our years of marriage and she had always kept her distance from me.

It had been too long since we’d had time like this, just for us, without external forces putting a weight on our relationship.

My hands began to explore the curves of her body through her silk nightgown, and she made that little breathless sound that always drove me wild.

“The boys are probably still asleep,” she whispered against my lips. “We could…”

Her suggestion was interrupted by the sound of running footsteps in the hallway, followed by a crash from somewhere downstairs. We both froze, listening to what sounded like multiple objects hitting the floor.

‘Or not,” Lumina sighed rolling her eyes in exasperation, but she was smiling.

Sounds like Ollie has found himself a partner in mischief,” I said, reluctantly releasing her and reaching for my robe to cover up as I continued speaking.

“We better go see what kind of disaster they’ve created.”

We made our way downstairs, following the sound of hushed whispers and what might have been giggling.

The scene that we saw as soon as we entered the kitchen would have been funny if it weren’t for the mess.

Both boys stood in the middle of what looked like a flour explosion, white powder covering every surface within a three-foot radius. At their feet lay the

remnants of what had once been a carton of eggs, shells and yolk creating an abstract art piece on our tile floor. Riley and Ollie looked up at us with

identical expressions of guilty panic.

“We’re sorry!” Ollie burst out immediately, stepping slightly in front of Riley in a protective gesture that I filed away for later consideration. “I wanted to

make pancakes for everyone, but it got really crazy really fast!”

“I can see that,” Lumina said, eyeing the damage calmly as she asked him. “What exactly happened here?”

“Well, I climbed up to get the flour from the high shelf,” Ollie explained, gesturing dramatically as usual “And Riley was trying to help me carry it, but it

was really heavy, and then I dropped it and it went EVERYWHERE, and then I tried to get the eggs but my hands were all slippery from the flour and…”

“And that’s when the eggs joined the party,” I finished, unable to suppress a smile. Despite the mess, there was something endearing about their

attempted breakfast surprise.

Riley, meanwhile, had gone very still and quiet, his eyes fixed on the floor. “I’m sorry for wasting food,” he said in a small voice. “I know food costs

money and people shouldn’t waste it and I’m really, really sorry.”

The formal way he spoke, the genuine distress in his voice over something as simple as spilled flour and broken eggs, struck me as odd. Most five-year-

olds would be more concerned about getting in trouble than about the economic aspect of wasted groceries.

“Hey,” I said, as I bent down to reach his eye level, making sure that we maintained eye contact. “It’s okay, buddy. Accidents happen. Nobody’s in trouble

here.”

Riley looked at me with, surprise and wariness present in his eyes as if he’d expected a very different response from me.

There was something in his expression that made my chest tighten, it was uncertainty that seemed far too mature for his age.

“Why don’t you boys go get cleaned up while I deal with this disaster zone?” Lumina suggested, already reaching for the paper towels. “I’ll make us some

proper breakfast.”

‘I can help clean- Riley started to offer, but I shook my head.

‘Nope. Bath time first. You two look like you’ve been wrestling with a bag of flour. And lost.”
