Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 76

Chapter 76

OLLIE

“Hello, my darling boy,” Grandma Silvia’s warm voice came through the phone making me smile.

“How are you doing? Your daddy told me that you enjoyed your sleepover with Riley.”

“Yeah! I did, he’s really nice. We played with my trucks and built a fort and watched movies and everything.”

“That sounds wonderful, sweetheart. Did you have fun?”

“Uh-huh. I really liked having Riley here. But his mama came and took him home too soon, and now I want him to come back.”

I heard Grandma make a soft sound, like she was thinking about something, important. She hummed for a moment before she asked again.

“You really like this Riley, don’t you? You like having him around, someone to be with and he’s your age mate isn’t he?”

“Yes he is, and I really do like having him around all the time. He’s my best friend.”

“Would you like to have Riley as a brother, Ollie? Someone who could live with you all the time?”

My heart jumped with excitement at the idea. “Yes! That would be amazing! Then we could play together every day and he wouldn’t have to go home

when his mama come to get him.”

I was so focused on how happy the idea made me that I didn’t notice the way Daddy’s face went pale, or how Mama’s expression changed from happiness to something else that was harder to read.

“That’s wonderful, darling,” Grandma said, and I could hear the smile in her voice, as she sounded pleased with what I told her.

I’m so glad you’re making such good friends.”

“Can I talk to Grandpa too?” I asked, bouncing on my toes.

‘Of course, sweetheart. Here he is.”

Hey there, champion,” Grandpa Samuel’s deep voice came through the phone. “Sounds like you had quite the adventure with your new friend, Riley and here I thought that it was a bad idea for Riley to attend the sleepover with you when you both just met for the second time.”

“I am really happy I asked him to come! Riley’s really smart and he knows how to build things and he’s really good at making up stories. I wish he could

stay here all the time.”

“Maybe that can be arranged,” Grandpa said, chuckling and something in his voice made me feel like he was planning something special.

“We’ll have to see what we can do about that.”

“Really? You think Riley could come live with us?”

“You never know, son. Sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them.”

I was practically vibrating with excitement now. If Grandma and Grandpa thought Riley could come live with us, then maybe it really could happen.

They were always able to make things work out, and they loved me enough to want me to be happy.

“I love you, Grandpa,” I said, my voice full of all the hope I was feeling..

“I love you too, champion. Now, let me talk to your daddy for a minute, okay?”

“Okay. Bye, Grandma! Bye, Grandpa!”

I handed the phone back to Daddy, but I could tell from his expression that he wasn’t as excited about the conversation as I was. His jaw was tight, and

he had that look he got when he was trying to stay calm but was actually really upset about something.

“We’ll talk soon, Mom,” he said into the phone, his voice carefully controlled as he didn’t let his true feeling show at all.

He listened a bit to what his mum said as he gritted his teeth.

“Mom, you can’t use Ollie to justify what you are asking me. I will talk to you later.’

Then he hung up and looked at me and Mama.

“Ollie,” he said, his voice gentler now as he squatted down and brushed my hair gently as he said,

“Why don’t you go get ready for your bath? Tomorrow’s your first day of school, and we want to make sure you get plenty of rest.”

I could tell he wanted to talk to Mama about something private, but I was too excited about the possibility of Riley coming to live with us to worry about whatever grown-up stuff they needed to discuss.

“Okay, Daddy. But can we call Riley later and tell him about maybe becoming my brother?”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, buddy,” Daddy said, running his hand through his hair as he looked worried about something but he didn’t tell me.

These things are complicated.”

“But Grandma and Grandpa said-”

“I know what they said, Ollie. But there’s a lot more to it than you understand right now. We’ll talk about it later, okay?”

I nodded, even though I didn’t really understand why everyone was being so serious about something that seemed so simple to me. If Riley wanted to live with us, and I wanted him to live with us, and Grandma and Grandpa thought it was a good idea, then why couldn’t we just make it happen?

I gathered up my pajamas and headed toward the bathroom, my mind racing with all the possibilities.

Riley and I could share my room, or maybe he could have the guest room and we could decorate it however he wanted. We could walk to school together every day, and do homework together, and play together whenever we wanted without anyone having to go home.

As I brushed my teeth, I thought about how happy Riley would be if he didn’t have to live with his mama anymore.

I couldn’t explain why, but something about the way he acted around her made me think he wasn’t very happy at home. Maybe if he lived with us, he could be happy all the time like I was.

I was so caught up in my wishful thinking that I didn’t hear about Mama and Papa talking in urgent hushed tones as Mama seemed mad about something.

All I could think about was Riley, and how much better everything would be when he was my brother for real.

I couldn’t wait for tomorrow to come quickly. We were going to see each other again and I’ll ask for another sleepover.

Something was way off with his mother Sophia and I didn’t like him spending time with her.
