Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 93

Chapter 93

OLLIE

I didn’t understand what was happening with Riley. From the moment I saw him into our classroom that morning, it was like he’d

become a completely different person, even going as far not to reciprocate the hug I gave him. The boy who had shared stories and

laughed with me during our sleepover, who had seemed so excited to finally have a friend and was eager to learn things, was gone.

In his place was someone cold and distant, someone who looked at me like I was a stranger or worse, like I was his enemy.

(30)

I tried everything I could think of to reconnect with him. Maybe I had done something wrong during the sleepover and I wanted to

make it up to him.

When Mrs. Henderson asked us to partner up for our morning math activity, I literally bounced out of my seat to claim the spot next

to Riley.

But he just stared straight ahead, keeping his face blank and pretending that I was invincible and when I tried to make a conversation about the problems that we were given to solve, he only gave me one-word answers that made it clear he didn’t want to talk to me at all.

“Hey, Riley,” I whispered during the activity, leaning closer to him. “Remember how we figured out that really hard puzzle during our sleepover? Maybe we can work together on these equations too.”

He turned to look at me then, and for a second, I thought I saw something change in his eyes – maybe recognition that he knew who I was, or maybe it was sadness.

But then it was gone, replaced by that empty, emotionless expression that was starting to scare me.

“I can do it myself,” he said flatly, turning back to his worksheet.

I felt my stomach drop, at his words as I swallowed hard as I added, a bit anxious and worried.

“But… but we’re supposed to be partners. Mrs. Henderson said-”

“I don’t need help,” Riley cut me off, his voice so cold it made me flinch like I had been hit.

The worst part was that he wasn’t just ignoring me, and pretending he didn’t know me, he was actively being mean.

When other kids in our class came over to introduce themselves, Riley was suddenly friendly and talkative, being interested in knowing things about them.

He smiled at them, answered their questions, even laughed at their jokes. But the moment I tried to join the conversation, he would either ignore me completely or find an excuse to walk away.

Chapter 93

During recess, I watched from across the playground as Riley played with a group of kids from our class. He was very active and engaging in the games they were playing. He acted nothing like the emotionless boy who had been sitting next to me all morning.

When I approached the group, hoping to join in their game of tag, Riley immediately stopped playing and walked to the other side of the playground.

“What’s wrong with your friend?” asked Marcus, one of the boys from our class, who was standing beside me, trying to dry his sweat

with his handkerchief after running a lap around the playground.

“He seems cool, but he acts like he doesn’t like you very much.”

I didn’t know how to answer that. Marcus seemed to have noticed his odd behavior and was wondering if I had done something to

deserve it.

How could I explain that Riley was supposed to be my friend, that just yesterday he had been excited about us being in the same

class, when the actions today proved otherwise.

“You guys look really similar,” said Emma, another classmate, as she tilted her head to the side as she studied me, searching for a reaction. “Like, really similar. Are you guys related or something?”

“No,” I said quickly, though I wasn’t entirely sure. There were so many things about Riley that I didn’t understand, so many questions that nobody seemed willing to answer, especially with how tense things were with Sophia and my parents and my grandparents. Something was happening but they were keeping it from me and Riley.
