AUTHOR’S POV.
For the next week, Alina barely had a moment to herself. She had thought that, once she woke up, she would have time to start investigating what she had remembered. But her family had other plans.
They hovered.
Damien rarely left her side, always dropping in under the pretense of “checking if she needed something.”
Luna practically turned into her shadow, fussing over her meals, her rest, and her comfort.
Even Darius, the man she had come to believe was strict and cold, would step into her room occasionally, pretending he needed to discuss something with Damien only to linger a few seconds longer, his eyes softening when they fell on her.
And strangely… Alina didn’t mind.
The constant warmth, the quiet laughter that filled the halls, the way Luna brushed her hair or Damien teased her… all of it felt new and foreign, yet familiar in a way that made her chest ache. She’d never known this kind of love before. It was overwhelming, but in the most beautiful way.
The subject of the blood merger or her engagement to Lucius never came up, and for that, she was profoundly grateful. It allowed her heart to breathe.
By the end of the week, the Evergreens decided to have a quiet family dinner to celebrate her recovery. Just them, no guests, no formality.
The dining room was bathed in golden light. The long mahogany table was covered in simple but elegant dishes, roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, a basket of freshly baked bread, and a few of Luna’s favorite salads.
Crystal glasses caught the light like soft fire, and the faint sound of classical music played in the background.
It felt intimate. Safe.
Luna clapped her hands once, her smile radiant as she looked around the table. “Finally,” she said, eyes glistening, “our family feels complete again.”
Alina smiled faintly, her fork pausing midair. The words felt like a balm against the ache in her chest.
“It wasn’t the same without you, sweetheart,” Luna continued softly. “The manor felt empty, even with everyone in it. Having you home again…it’s like we can finally breathe.”
Darius, seated at the head of the table, nodded. “Your mother’s right. There’s been a light missing from this house for too long.” His tone was gruff, but his eyes betrayed the emotion in his voice. “We’re glad to have you back, Alina.”
Alina’s throat tightened. For a moment, she couldn’t speak. “Thank you,” she managed, her voice trembling slightly. “For everything.”
Damien grinned, leaning back in his chair. “And for scaring us half to death,” he added lightly, though his voice carried warmth. “You really know how to make an entrance, don’t you?”
Alina chuckled softly, shaking her head. “I didn’t mean to.”
“I know,” Damien said with a smirk. “But admit it…you like the attention.”
“I will admit nothing.” She said with a sly grin, making the table laugh.
She looked around the table, the father who once seemed like a myth to her, the brother who carried his warmth so effortlessly, and the mother whose love felt like sunlight.
“I never thought…” Her voice trailed off, trembling. “I never thought I’d have this again.”
Luna’s smile softened, her eyes glistening. “You always did, sweetheart. You just didn’t remember it.”
Darius cleared his throat quietly, trying, and failing to mask the emotion in his gaze. “It’s good to have you home, Alina. The manor really hasn’t felt right without you.”
Damien leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on the table. “He’s right,” he said with a grin. “It’s been… quiet. And boring. Finally, there’s someone to take Mom’s attention off me.”
Luna swatted his arm lightly. “Oh, hush. You love the attention.”
“I tolerate it,” Damien said, feigning indifference. Then his smile turned sincere as he met Alina’s gaze. “It’s good to have you back, Lina.”
Alina smiled softly. “It’s good to be back.”
For a moment, everything felt perfect…the warmth, the laughter, the clinking of glasses as they toasted to her return. It was almost surreal how easily she fit here, how natural it felt to laugh with them.
Then Darius cleared his throat, setting his glass down. “Your mother and I wanted tonight to be just us. But,” he paused, looking toward Luna, “I believe she has something to share.”
Luna’s eyes brightened. “Ah, yes!” She clasped her hands together in delight. “Now that our Alina is home, we’ll be having an official celebration this weekend. A grand event, to introduce her back into society.”
Alina’s eyes widened slightly. “A… party?”
“Of course!” Luna said, beaming. “Just a small one…well, small by our standards. A few hundred guests, maybe five or six hundred at most.”
“Mother, that’s not small.” Damien said with a laugh.
Luna waved him off. “Nonsense. It’s going to be lovely. There’ll be music, dancing, and the most exquisite food. The entire city will know that the Evergreen daughter is home.”
Alina blinked. “Mother, that’s really not necessary. I mean, I don’t want you to stress yourself—”
Luna cut her off with a firm shake of her head. “Nonsense. You’re the daughter of the Evergreen family, Alina.
This is not about stress,it’s about joy.” Her eyes softened. “And after everything we’ve been through, this family deserves some joy.”
Damien leaned in with a smirk. “You just want an excuse to throw another one of your legendary parties, don’t you?”
Luna gasped dramatically, pressing a hand to her chest. “How dare you, Damien! I am a woman of sophistication and purpose.”
Darius chuckled, the sound rumbling deep in his chest. “A sophisticated woman who can’t resist a grand celebration.”
“Exactly,” Damien chimed in. “You see, Father agrees with me.”
Luna swatted the air at him, laughing. “You two are impossible.” Then she turned to Alina, squeezing her hand again. “Don’t listen to them. You deserve this. Let me do this for you, darling.”
Alina smiled softly, her heart swelling. “Okay,” she said at last. “If it makes you happy, Mother.”
“It makes me very happy.” Luna said with a victorious grin.
Darius leaned back in his chair, watching the exchange with quiet satisfaction. “Good. It’s settled then.” He raised his glass. “To new beginnings.”
“To new beginnings.” Luna echoed, raising hers.
