AUTHOR’S POV.
Earlier that day on the other side of town, Lucian and Ace were moving around their hotel suit with that sharp, focused energy they always had before following a lead. After getting ready, they both walk outside.
Two men standing in front of a black SUV, both wearing the same expression.
Wary determination.
Lucian opened then closed the car door with a soft thud, his jaw tight as he adjusted the cuffs of his black shirt. His movements were calm and decisive, it was something he had perfected with time.
He has trained himself to handle chaos with chilling composure. But beneath the surface, tension rippled through him like a wire drawn too tight.
Ace, on the other hand, had no interest in hiding his anxiety.
He planted his hands on his hips and exhaled sharply. “Boss…. are we seriously trusting this girl?” he asked, unable to hold it back any longer. “I mean, this could be anything. A trap. A distraction. A cry for attention. Anything.”
Lucian didn’t respond immediately. His eyes lingered on the fading sun before he finally spoke, voice smooth but edged with steel. “We don’t have time to question every possibility, Ace. We have to go there and see.”
Ace huffed, pacing once. “Still. It doesn’t sit right with me.”
“Nothing about this situation sits right,” Lucian replied, his tone clipped. “But someone finally reached out. And she is willing to talk, something nobody has been willing to do since we got here.”
Ace opened his mouth, then closed it, frustrated.
Lucian stepped toward him. “Is the perimeter secured?”
“Yes,” Ace said immediately. “It has. We swept the area twice. Men are watching the neighboring buildings, entrances, exits….….. everything.”
“Good.” Lucian’s nod was small, but approving.
But Ace wasn’t done.
“Boss… I still think I should come along.”
Lucian stopped adjusting his sleeves and shot him a sharp look. “The lady asked me to come alone. So that is what I will do.”
Ace clenched his jaw. “What if it’s a setup, Lucian? You should just let me come with you. I won’t follow you inside. I’ll stay in the car. Just close enough if something goes wrong.”
Lucian stared at him…long and unblinking, almost calculating.
Ace held the stare firmly, no fear in his eyes, only loyalty. The kind that was bone–deep.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then…finally, Lucian exhaled, slow and reluctant. “Fine.”
Relief washed over Ace’s face, though he hid most of it behind a stiff nod. “Thank you.”
Chapter 291
They climbed into the SUV.
The tension in the car thickened immediately, a heaviness layered with expectation, fear, and that sharp thread of hope none of them dare to speak about.
The engine hummed to life.
And they
The city blurred past their windows, neon signs flickering on, cars honking in quick bursts, people rushing home or toward nightlife. Ravinne lived loudly, but the atmosphere in the car was the opposite.
Silent.
Sharp.
Electric.
Ace glanced at Lucian from the corner of his eye. Lucian sat stone still, staring through the windshield with a focused intensity that chilled even him.
His fingers tapped once against his thigh, a rare sign of agitation. Ace was surprised to see.
“We’ll get something today,” Ace said quietly. “We have to.”
Lucian didn’t look at him. “We will.”
Ace swallowed. “Boss… if anything feels off, even a little-”
Lucian cut him off with a low, leveled tone. “If anything feels off, Ace, I will walk out. You’ll get your opening.”
Ace nodded slowly, forcing himself to breathe.
When they pulled up near the restaurant, a small, quiet place tucked between two art galleries, Ace parked strategically. His eyes swept the area with the precision of a soldier.
He finally pointed toward the large window on the right side of the restaurant.
“I’ll park here,” he murmured. “It gives me a clear view of the window seat.”
Lucian gave a dry, weary exhale. “What is it now, Ace?”
Ace turned toward him fully this time. “Boss…. please. Sit by the window seat so I can easily step in if needed.”
Lucian stared at him, unblinking. The plea was subtle but unmistakable.
Finally, he nodded once. “Okay.”
Ace released a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding.
Lucian pushed open the door and stepped out.
The moment he crossed the threshold into the restaurant, the atmosphere shifted.
Heads turned, slowly at first, then in clusters. A hush fell over three tables. A group of women at the far side stilled, then began giggling softly, whispering behind their hands.
A few pointed.
Chapter 291
Lucian ignored all of themt
His gaze swept the room with sharp precision, every table, every corner, he was searching for every possible threat.
And then he saw her.
A girl seated alone at a corner booth. A wide–brimmed hat pulled low over her face. Shoulders hunched, fingers fidgeting with the edge of her cup. She looked like someone trying desperately to disappear into her chair.
Lucian’s eyes narrowed.
He approached her with slow, measured steps. The air seemed to thicken.
When he reached her table, he didn’t speak first.
Instead, he tapped gently on the wooden surface.
The girl jerked violently, her hands flying to her chest as she gasped. She looked around like a startled mouse, eyes darting toward every dark corner of the restaurant.
Then her gaze lifted, and collided with Lucian’s.
Her eyes widened.
“Lu…cian B..lackwood?” she stuttered, voice so soft it barely carried over the restaurant noise.
Lucian’s expression didn’t change. “And you are?” he asked, his tone cool, his gaze sweeping over her, the trembling hands, the frightened posture, the way she clutched her hat.
“Violet.” She whispered.
Lucian tilted his head. “You are the one that called me?”
“Yes.” Her voice was nearly inaudible. She glanced around again, as though someone might leap out of a shadow at any moment. “I…..I’m sorry. I didn’t know if you would come. Or if… or if it was safe to call.”
Lucian took a seat, movements deliberate and calculated. His eyes locked onto hers, unwavering. He didn’t speak immediately, he simply studied her… her fear, her tension, her nervous habit of twisting her ring.
Violet’s breathing grew uneven under his scrutiny. Her shoulders shook slightly. Her fingers trembled around the glass of water in front of her.
He said nothing, but he didn’t have to.
His silence alone was pressure.
Heavy. Intimidating. Unavoidable.
Violet swallowed hard, her eyes dropping to the table.
But then-
Something caught Lucian’s attention.
A flicker of red.
His heart slammed hard in his chest.
A dot.
