AUTHOR’S POV.
“Go figures.” Damien rolled his eyes at her then noticed her already looking at him. “Why are you looking at me like that?” He squinted his eyes suspiciously at her.
She smirked deviously “Because I know that you know a secret way out…. And you, my darling brother, will get us out of here.
Damien groaned, hands on his hips. “God… why did I even agree to join this quest in the first place? You’re going to get me in trouble.”
Alina smirked, a playful glint in her eyes. “Because you’re a loving brother who loves me so much and cannot bear to see me get in trouble with Father.”
Damien gave her a deadpan look. “I’m pretty sure that’s not it. But… come on, let’s go get ready.”
Talia laughed, shaking her head at them, while Alina glared at Damien, her lips pressed together in mock annoyance. “Seriously?” Alina muttered under her breath as the three of them headed off.
They split up to their rooms. Alina lingered in hers for a moment, taking a deep breath, before Talia and Damien went to their respective rooms to freshen up. Showers, baths, brushing their hair, making sure they looked presentable.
ce everyone was ready, they met in the hallway. Alina fell into step beside Talia, Damien leading the way. “So…. give you a
of the manor?” Damien said casually, walking toward one end of the hallway.
hi, sure,” Talia said, glancing around making sure the guards heard. “This place is huge.”
Alina chimed in, pointing at different doors and hallways. “It’s not just huge…it’s like a maze. You should see the secret passageway we used to get to my father’s study.”
Damien immediately put a finger to his lips. “Shh.. don’t tell her that. It’s a secret for a reason.”
Talia’s eyes narrowed, but she smirked. “Relax. It’s not like I’m going to sneak into your father’s study or something. I’m not looking for a death wish.”
Alina laughed softly. “You have no idea. That passageway is… well, it’s insane.”
They continued through twisting hallways, Damien occasionally glancing back to make sure Talia and Alina were following The bickering and jokes continued, lightening the mood despite the urgency underneath.
Finally, they burst out outside the manor grounds, the crisp morning air hitting them, and a sleek getaway car waited just beyond the gates.
“Alright,” Damien muttered, sliding into the driver’s seat. “Where to?”
Talia quickly rattled off the address of the person who had worked for the man they were chasing. Damien nodded, slamming the car into drive.
When they arrived, the place was deserted. Windows boarded up, paint peeling, an obvious sign it had been abandoned for
months.
“Lucky us,” Alina muttered. “Deserted. Fantastic.”

Then, out of nowhere, they spotted a lone figure sitting on the steps outside. Damien rolled down the window. “Hey… excuse me! Are you the person who lives here? Or knows someone who does?”
The man looked up, squinting in the sun. “Who?”
“The lady. The one who used to live here.”
The man shook his head. “She’s dead. Murdered. A few months ago.”
Alina froze. “What? She… she was murdered? By whom?”
“I don’t know,” he admitted. “They just found her with a gunshot wound. No investigation. Nothing. That’s all I know.”
Damien nodded, hand on the wheel. “Thanks.”
The man gave a small shrug before walking away.
Alina groaned, leaning against the car door. “Why is it that every time we take one step forward, something happens to push us ten steps back? What is going on?”
Talia put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Calm down. Relax. We’re going to find something.”
Alina’s eyes blazed. “How? How are we going to find anything if the only lead we had leads to a dead end?”
Talia smiled softly. “Breathe. Trust me. Something’s coming.”
if on cue, the man they had just spoken to turned back. “Oh… by the way. That woman had a daughter. Nobody’s seen her
the funeral.”
ana’s heart skipped. “A daughter? Where is she?”
The man shook his head. “I have no idea. She disappeared after her mother’s funeral. Nobody knows where she went.”
Alina’s voice was almost a whisper. “Thank you…. thank you so much.”
“No problem,” he said and finally left.
Talia turned to Alina, her expression soft. “See? I told you. Relax. We’re going to find something.”
Alina exhaled slowly, trying to steady her nerves. “Yeah… yeah, you did.”
Damien leaned back in his seat, exasperated. “So… what now?”
Alina turned her gaze forward, eyes determined. “Now… we find the daughter. Wherever she may be. But first… we go to the
restaurant.”
Talia frowned. “Okay… are you hungry?”
Alina shook her head. “No.”
Damien’s eyes narrowed. “Wait… what restaurant?”
“The one…. the shootout happened at.” Alina’s voice was calm but fierce.
Damien’s eyes widened. “Are you out of your… fucking mind?”
Talia leaned back in the seat, shaking her head, a mix of amusement and disbelief on her face. “Alina… you really think this is safe?”
Alina’s grip tightened on the edge of the seat. “Safe? No. Necessary? Absolutely.”
Damien groaned again, slumping in the driver’s seat. “You really don’t make this easy for me, do you?”
Alina just smiled, that gleam in her eyes that always meant trouble. “You should know me by now. I never do.”
Talia exhaled, muttering, “God help us all…”
