Chapter 349
Chapter 342
AUTHOR’S POV
Meanwhile, Luna’s hands were still resting lightly on Alina’s. “It’s over,” she whispered, though there was no comfort in her tone. Her eyes betrayed helplessness, she wanted to shield her daughter from this, but there was nothing she could do.
Alina felt like she was trapped in another dimension. Even though her mother’s hand rested lightly on hers, trying to serve as a quiet anchor, it did nothing to bri her back.
She was suffocating under the weight of lies, under the facade her father and Cassian were presenting.
Darius answered questions with calm indifference, his words polished, controlled, practiced. “Lucius and Dahlia are both aware of this arrangement and have agreed to proceed with the engagement next week.”
Cassian smiled at the cameras, nodding occasionally. “I am honored, and I look forward to building a future with Dahlia, ensuring both our families are united in strength and purpose.”
Alina’s grip on her dress remained unbroken. Her mind was screaming, her chest aching. She didn’t speak. She didn’t move. Even when flashes blinded her momentarily, she
n’t flinch.
Luna’s hand pressed more firmly against hers. “I’m here,” she whispered, almost silently. “I’m here.”
Damien’s hand tightened around his phone. “I know what you’re doing,” he muttered under his breath, jaw tight. He kept his eyes on Cassian, noticing every small movement, every glance that Cassian threw Alina’s way.
Alina, sitting frozen, felt tears prickle behind her eyes but refused to let them fall. She was fighting. Fighting the sense of helplessness, the claustrophobia, the betrayal she felt from every adult in the room.
Even though she was silent, she was determined not to let them see her broken.
Cassian leaned back in his chair, that smug, practiced expression on his face, entirely unnoticed by Darius and the crowd. He watched Alina with cold amusement, enjoying the control he wielded over the situation.
Damien’s suspicion and anger radiated around him unnoticed by the family in front of the press. Darius’s voice carried over everything, measured and unwavering.
“Any further questions?” he asked. “If not, we thank you for attending. Lucius and Dahlia look forward to starting this next chapter in their lives.”
LIES!!!! Alinan screamed in her head but the words never left her lips.
The flashes kept coming, congratulations shouted from all directions, but Alina heard none of it. She felt nothing. It was like she was a ghost in her own life, watching from within her body as she tried to hold tightly to the last fragments of her willpower.
Luna’s eyes never left her daughter. She understood the walls Alina had built, the desperate fight not to break down completely. Luna’s hand squeezed hers ever so slightly, a silent promise that she would not abandon her.
What hurt Alina most was Darius’s impassivity as he kept answering questions calmly, offering the barest of smiles, entirely indifferent to the turmoil in her heart.
And Damien, seeing everything, knew what needed to be done. He had kept his suspicions quiet until now, watching, waiting, and now he needed to act. The wheels of his plan were starting to turn.
