The moment the elderly woman disappeared down the aisle, her slow footsteps fading into the hush of the library, the silence that followed felt heavier than before.
Ace exhaled sharply, rolling his shoulders once, then turned to Lucian and Violet.
“Let’s begin.”
Violet swallowed hard, her fingers curling into the fabric of her sleeves as if she needed to anchor herself to something solid. Lucian gave a single nod, already moving, already scanning the shelf with sharp, focused eyes.
They walked toward it together.
The shelf.
The one the woman had pointed to.
The one Ruby Gale had loved.
The books stood there like quiet sentinels, old spines, cracked leather, faded titles. They didn’t look special. That was the most terrifying part.
Ace dragged a hand down his face and muttered, “Alright. What exactly are we looking for?”
Lucian didn’t even look at him as he reached for the first book.
“I don’t know.”
Violet frowned. “You don’t know?”
Lucian pulled the book free, flipping it open slowly, methodically. “No. But we’ll know when we see it.”
Ace let out a short, humorless breath. “That’s reassuring.”
They spread out, each taking a section of the shelf.
The only sounds were pages turning, the soft thud of books being set down, Violet’s uneven breathing as she tried to keep her panic from spilling over. Every few seconds, her eyes flicked toward Lucian, searching his face for certainty, for reassurance, for something.
Minutes passed.
Then more.
Thirty minutes later, frustration finally snapped.
Violet slammed a book shut, the sound echoing louder than she meant it to.
“This isn’t getting us anywhere!” Her voice cracked despite her effort to sound strong. “We’ve been doing this forever and there’s nothing. Maybe…maybe my mother didn’t keep anything here. Maybe we’re wrong.”
Lucian straightened slowly, his expression firm but gentle as he turned toward her.
“Calm down,” he said quietly. “The answer is here. We’re just not searching in the right place.”

Violet’s hands trembled as she gestured helplessly around them. Then where is the right place to search? Because it feels like we’re just going in circles.”
Ace closed the book he was holding and nodded once. “She’s right. We’ve been at this for over thirty minutes now, and we’ve got nothing.”
Lucian lifted a hand, stopping both of them before the frustration could spiral further.
“Both of you need to calm down,” he said evenly. “We will find it. We just need to think.”
Violet laughed weakly, tears stinging her eyes. “Think about what?”
Lucian stepped closer to her and lowered his voice, it was not commanding now, but steady and grounding.

“Tell me,” he said. “Was there anything your mother liked to talk about? Anything specific she loved to read?”
Violet shook her head slowly. “I don’t know. I didn’t even know she loved to read.”
The admission hurt more than she expected. Guilt coiled tight in her chest.
Lucian nodded, accepting that without judgment. “Alright. Then how about what she liked to talk about?”
Violet inhaled shakily. “Family,” she said after a moment. “Love. The future. Just… everything positive.”
Lucian’s eyes sharpened.
He turned back to the shelf.
Ace watched him carefully. “You thinking what I think you’re thinking?”
Lucian didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached for another book, this one was thinner, its spine worn smooth from repeated use.
He pulled it free.
Home at Last.
A family–oriented book.
Lucian opened it.
“What are you doing?” Violet asked, stepping closer.
“Hold on,” Lucian said.
He flipped through the pages slowly and carefully, then his fingers paused and his gaze narrowed.
There…faint and almost invisible unless you were looking closely were words underlined in blue pen.
Lucian looked up.
“I found it.”
Violet’s heart lurched. “Found what?”
Ace moved closer, peering over Lucian’s shoulder. “What exactly are we looking at?”
Lucian turned to Violet, something like admiration flickering across his face.

“Check the other books,” he interrupted, already pulling another title from the shelf. “See if there are words underlined.”
Ace frowned. “Yeah… I came across some carlier. Didn’t really read much into it.”
Lucian looked at him sharply. “Every book you find with underlined words…go search them and bring them. That’s what we’re working with.”
Ace’s eyes lit with understanding. “We might be onto something
Violet pressed a hand to her mouth, emotion crashing over her in waves. “She planned this,” she whispered. “She knew.
Lucian met her gaze, unwavering. “Yes. She did.”
And for the first time since they’d walked into that ancient library, hope… fragile, dangerous, and alive, settled quietly between them.
Twenty minutes later, the sound of a book hitting the table cut through the quiet like a gavel.
Violet let go of the last book as if her hands had finally run out of strength.
“This is it,” she said, her voice hoarse. “This is all of it.”
Ace looked down at the small pile of books scattered across the table, then nodded once. “Yeah. That’s everything.”
