Chapter 353

AUTHOR’S POV.

returned to the Evergreen mansion feeling lighter than he had in days. For the first time since all of this chaos had begun, he felt a flicker of hope, a spark that maybe, just maybe, things could be set right. But as soon as he stepped into the grand foyer, the weight of responsibility slammed back in. Two of the family’s longtime servants approached him, their expressions tense.

Master Damien,” one of them said softly, your father is in the study. He requested to see you immediately.

Damien’s shoulders stiffened, and a hard expression set across his face. He nodded once, his jaw tight. I’ll go,he said, his voice measured. He didn’t need anyone to explain further. Every servant in the Evergreen household moved with precision, and any deviation in protocol often meant something serious.

He strode down the familiar hallway toward his father’s study, each step heavier than the last, though his mind tried to cling to the sense of hope he had just felt. His hand hovered over the polished door before he knocked.

Enter, came his father’s voice, clipped but weary.

Damien pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Darius looked up briefly, eyes tired, a subtle sag to his shoulders, the weight of endless calculations and family obligations visible on his face. For a moment. Damien felt a flicker of pity, but it was shortlived. He remembered exactly why his father allowed things to unfold this way. He remembered that Darius could end all the chaos in a moment, yet he had chosen not to. The pity vanished instantly.

You asked for me,Damien said, his tone neutral, though beneath it simmered frustration.

Darius gestured toward the chair opposite him. Sit,he commanded.

Damien complied, lowering himself into the chair, hands resting on his knees.

How’s the Corven project going?Darius asked, his gaze briefly flicking to the documents in front of him.

It’s going along well,Damien replied evenly, careful not to betray his irritation.

Darius didn’t respond immediately, instead returning his attention to the papers spread neatly before him. After a moment, he looked up again. I need you to go on a business trip outside of Ravinne,he said casually, as if it were a trivial request.

Damien’s fist clenched, knuckles whitening. What? now?he asked through gritted teeth, though he kept his composure.

It’s for a few days,Darius continued, but you’ll be back in time for Alina’s engagement to Cassian.

The words hit Damien like a blow. He felt the surge of anger rise in his chest. His father was deliberately sending him away, knowing full well that this was the most crucial time for him to act, the time when Lucian, the real Lucius, needed him here in Ravinne. He recognized the strategy immediately. Darius suspected something, no doubt, but it was too late to change the direction of his plans.

Can’t I handle the meeting online?Damien asked, keeping his voice calm but firm.

No,Darius said, eyes unwavering. The client specifically requested a physical presence. You must go.”

Damien exhaled slowly, knowing resistance was futile. Okay, father.

You leave first thing tomorrow morning,Darius stated, already turning his attention back to the paperwork.

Damien rose from the chair, a tight knot of anger coiling in his stomach. This was exactly what his father intended: sending

him away at the exact moment he needed to stay. He would not allow it to derail him, not when the stakes were this high. Lucian needed him, Alina needed him, and now, of all times, his father was trying to push him out of the picture.

He left the study, slamming the door softly behind him, a quiet but firm protest,

His steps were purposeful as he made his way to Alina’s room. He needed to see her. He needed to reassure her, to remind her that she wasn’t alone, even if she felt like the world had turned against her.

He knocked once before entering, his hand lingering on the frame for a moment.

Alina didn’t turn to greet him. She was standing in front of the balcony, eyes fixed on the horizon, as though the view could somehow fill the emptiness inside her. Damien approached slowly, studying the hollow expression on her face, the pallor in her skin, the quiet shadow of exhaustion she had become.

How are you doing?he asked softly, though he already knew the answer would be silence.

No reply came. Damien let the question hang in the air, his voice gentle but firm.

I understand how alone you feel right now,he continued, moving closer. It must feel like the whole world is against you. Like no one understands. But you don’t have to worry. I’m going to fix it. I promise you, I’ll fix it.”

He let the weight of those words linger. You will not get married to Cassian. I know he isn’t Lucius, and that marriageit’s not going to happen.

Alina finally turned toward him, her eyes hollow yet alert, capturing his words. You do?she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Yes,Damien said firmly. I do. And I’m working on something to make sure this ends the way it should.

Alina’s expression was cautious, a flicker of hope and wariness fighting in her hollow gaze. Damien couldn’t tell her everything, Lucian had specifically asked him not to. Alina was too impulsive, too reckless when it came to matters of her heart. If she knew the truth too soon, it could jeopardize everything.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll have to go out of town,” Damien said, his tone careful, measured. But I need you to stay strong. Play along with the engagement if you have to….but trust me, this isn’t over. You’re not going to marry Cassian. I promise you, it will not happen.

Alina’s brow furrowed. What exactly are you up to?she asked, her voice laced with both suspicion and a fragile hope.

Damien shook his head gently. Don’t worry about that just yet. You’ll see soon enough. But I promise you….whatever it takes, you will not get married to him. Do you understand?
