Helen nodded hard. Her shoulders, which had been tense the entire time, finally relaxed. She looked at Noelle, her eyes filled with trust and newly rekindled courage.

Noelle smiled and took her to a dessert shop.
The car reached an intersection and stopped at a red light.
Just then, Sebastian called.
Noelle held the steering wheel with one hand and her phone with the other. “Honey, I’ve picked up Helen already. I’m taking her to get dessert now. Yeah…”
Helen sat quietly and didn’t interrupt.
The red light turned green.
Noelle released the brake and stepped on the gas.
At that moment, a red heavy–duty truck came speeding toward her from the right.
“Noelle! Watch out!”
Helen was sitting in the passenger seat. She turned her head and saw the truck charging straight at them. Her eyes widened as she screamed.
The truck came roaring in.
The brake lights never flashed. It was as if it were intentional, slamming hard, straight into them.
Without hesitation, Helen lunged toward Noelle.
“Noelle!”
Bang!
When the distance was less than ten feet, the car’s front suddenly fishtailed. The tires screeched against the pavement.

Almost purely on instinct, Noelle jerked the steering wheel hard and slammed the accelerator to the floor.
The high–performance sports car burst with power. The rear swung wide, narrowly letting the driver’s side avoid a direct frontal collision.
Boom!
A deafening crash.
The truck’s front smashed into the rear side of the passenger seat. The massive impact sent the sports car spinning out of control.
“Ugh!”
Even though Helen shielded Noelle with her body, the force still flung her hard against the car door. She let out a muffled groan.
The airbags exploded open, cushioning part of the impact.
As the car spun, Noelle gripped the steering wheel with one hand while instinctively protecting Helen’s head with the other. Her own arm slammed into the window frame from the momentum, pain shooting through it.
After sliding more than 30 feet, the car finally crashed into the roadside guardrail and came to a stop.
White smoke rose from the hood. The alarm blared sharply.
Gasps and the sound of screeching brakes filled the area.
At the hospital.
Sebastian and Lucas rushed over.
Seeing the thick bandages around Noelle’s arm, a storm surged in Sebastian’s dark eyes.
“Are you feeling unwell anywhere? What did the doctor say?” He pulled Noelle into his arms. His voice was low and hoarse, trembling despite himself.
“I’m fine. Just surface injuries. No broken bones.” Leaning against his solid chest, Noelle could clearly hear his rapid heartbeat. She relaxed and lightly patted his back. “Don’t worry. Helen’s inside getting checked. The doctor said it’s a mild concussion.”
Lucas stood nearby, his expression equally grave. “What happened? Traffic police said the truck’s brakes failed?”
“Brakes failed?” Noelle lifted her head from Sebastian’s chest, her eyes sharp as blades. “That truck accelerated straight at us. The target was obvious. It was my car.”
The pressure around Sebastian dropped instantly. He looked at Lucas, his tone leaving no room for doubt.
