He wanted Noelle to know everything about him. With her, he had nothing to hide.

Noelle also decided to bring Helen along. She wanted her to relax too. Staying home every day would suffocate her.

Since they weren’t leaving for IBI until the next day, Noelle took some time to go to the night market. She refined some pills for Harlan to sell.

Harlan smiled and walked her out.

Noelle had just stepped out of the pharmacy when a familiar voice rang out. She stopped.

Ahead, Jasper stood in the shadows, watching her.

His expression was complicated, filled with guilt, pain, and emotions that were hard to put into words.

Noelle narrowed her eyes and didn’t move.

Jasper took the initiative to walk toward her. “I know everything now. You got first place nationwide. The internet is full of news about you. Congratulations.”

His voice was hoarse. As he spoke, he looked at Noelle, as if he were genuinely happy for her.

Noelle had become the national top scorer, a genius admired by the whole country.

Gresham had thrown a huge tantrum at home and regretted it endlessly. If he hadn’t kicked Noelle out back then, he could’ve shared in this honor now.

Jasper, on the other hand, felt proud of Noelle. My sister really is amazing, scoring that high.

Even without returning to the Guzmans, she can live well. Thinking that way, some of the guilt in his heart seemed to

“I … prepared a gift for you. I hope you’ll like it.”

He carefully took a gift box out of his pocket and handed it to Noelle.

Inside the box was a bracelet.

Back then, when he gave Viola a bracelet, Noelle had looked at him/expectantly and said she wanted one too. He hadn’t given her one then. Now, he was making up for it.

Noelle looked at the bracelet and let out a mocking smile.

She reached out and took it. Jasper’s eyes lit up. But the next second, Noelle tossed the bracelet and the box straight into the trash without hesitation.

“It’s dirty.”

Those three words slammed hard into Jasper’s chest.

Jasper’s face turned deathly pale.

His gaze swept over the trash can. His throat bobbed, but he forced himself to stay calm. “If you don’t like it, that’s fine. I’ll buy you another gift.”

“Jasper, who are you fooling?”

Noelle actually laughed. “Are you pretending to be a good brother now? Don’t you think that’s ridiculous?

“When I needed a brother, where were you? When Viola stole my things, framed me, and led everyone to isolate me, where were you, the ‘good brother‘? Other than saying something useless like ‘Viola’s still young‘ and ‘Cut her some slack,’ what did you ever do?

“And now you come running over to act all affectionate and righteous? Jasper, this belated, performative concern of yours just makes me sick.”

Her rapid–fire accusations drained the color from Jasper’s face. The calm he’d been forcing himself to keep shattered completely. His voice trembled faintly. “I–I know the Kains wronged you in the past. I didn’t do enough… I just want to make it up to you…”

“Make it up to me?”

Noelle sounded like she’d heard the biggest joke in the world. She lifted her hand, her fingers brushing lightly over the sapphire–key necklace at her neck.

It was from Sebastian.

She looked at Jasper, the mockery in her eyes nearly spilling over. “Your so–called making up for it is cheap and driven by guilt. I don’t need it, and I’m not buying it. Or is the real reason you came looking for me because I became the SAT top scorer, because you finally see some value in me, so now you’re trying to suck up?”

“Noelle, why do you have to think of me that way?” Jasper looked hurt. His voice carried a weary helplessness, as if he didn’t even have the strength left to argue.

“How else am I supposed to think of you?”

Noelle stepped forward, her gaze sharp as a blade, stripping away every last bit of his pretense. “Should I be moved to tears and gratefully accept this charity–like concern that came more than ten years too late?”
