Elmer shouted her name several more times, but there was still no response.

Even Viola had abandoned him. How the hell was he supposed to get out and race Stephen
now?
Just as he was about to give up completely, he suddenly heard the sound of a key turning in the lock. A second later, the door creaked open. Viola stood on the other side.
“Viola!”
Elmer’s eyes lit up, pure relief washing over his face.
“Viola!” he said again, overflowing with gratitude.
She let out a conflicted sigh. “You’re impossible, you know that? I really don’t know what to do with you. Mom and Dad are out at a gala tonight. They’ll be back by 10. You have to be home before then, got it?”
“Yes, yes, absolutely! I’ll be back on time, I swear! Elmer was practically bouncing. He pulled her into a quick hug, grinning ear to ear. “I knew you were the one who cared about me most! You’re nothing like that annoying Noelle! I’ll bring you a gift after I win, I promise!”
Before Viola could even react, he was already bolting down the hallway like a bullet out of a
gun.
She stood there, watching his figure disappear.
Truth be told, she hadn’t planned on letting Elmer out at all. Willow had made it very clear, that under no circumstances was Elmer to be let out. Viola was well aware that she was going behind her mother’s back, and it made her a little nervous.
But she just couldn’t stand Elmer comparing her to Noelle.
That one sentence had pushed her over the edge. So, in a moment of frustration, she’d unlocked the door.
“It’s just a race–what’s the worst that could happen?” she told herself.
Elmer had done motorcycle races before, and he’d always come back fine.
As long as he was home by 10, everything would be okay.
And if she played it right, she might even earn a few more points with him.

Feeling satisfied with herself, Viola grabbed a glass of water and went back to her room to keep studying.
Over at Mount Emberwing, Stephen had already arrived.
And not just him, a whole crowd of his boys had come with him.
“Time’s almost up. You think that punk Elmer bailed?”
“You think I, the second son of the Kains, would be scared of you?”
A cold voice cut through the air as Elmer strode in with purpose, swagger written all over his face.
“Well, look who actually showed up! I figured you’d be too scared to crawl out,” Stephen sneered.
“If you didn’t show, I still would’ve come!”
“Hah, keep talking tough. Let’s see if you’re still so cocky once you’re crying mid–race.”
Stephen let out a cold laugh. “To keep things fair and to avoid anyone crying foul later, I brought Mr. Blair here to officiate and sign a death waiver. Elmer, you got the guts to sign it?”
Motorcycle racing was extreme and dangerous. Accidents weren’t just possible, they were expected. Before every serious race, both sides were required to sign a death waiver–win or lose, life or death, no legal action.
It was the unspoken law of the underground racing world.
Marsh Blair, the godfather of the Riverdale Motorcycle Association, was a living legend. Respected on both sides of the law, he was the final word on racing disputes and the man everyone listened to.
Elmer jumped at the chance. “Hell yeah I’ll sign it! If you crash and burn, don’t come crying to me!”
As they spoke, a group of men approached.
At the front of the pack was none other than Marsh himself.
Loud floral shirt, slicked–back hair, a cigarette dangling from his lips. He had that cocky, effortless charm that only seasoned chaos could produce.
“Mr. Blair, sir!” Both Elmer and Stephen instantly dropped their bravado, greeting him with

respectful tones.
This guy was the real deal. The head of the association.
Connected to everyone. Untouchable.
No one dared mess with him.

Every serious racer dreamed of joining the Motorcycle Association, and Elmer was no exception.
He’d wanted in for years. Funny enough, Noelle once told him she could get him a spot in the association.
He scoffed just thinking about it. At the time, he’d gone off on her.
Yeah, right.
Total liar.
She was just some freeloader in the Kain’s estate. What power could she possibly have?
What a damn joke.
“You sure about this? Thought it through?” Marsh asked, cigarette hanging from his lips as he gave them both a sideways glance. “Life or death–that’s up to fate. Whatever happens out there, don’t blame the winner.”
“Yes, Mr. Blair! We’re ready,”
Elmer and Stephen nodded in unison, voices firm.
“All right then.”
