“Roman?” Mary blinked and furrowed her brows. “That doesn’t sound right. Roman’s been close with your grandfather for decades. Why would he take someone else’s side and turn on you? There has to be some confusion.”
“There’s no confusion!” Viola jumped up, her voice shaky as tears filled her eyes. “Mom, are you seriously doubting me too? Roman really stood with them! I’m scared he’s going to believe everything they said and start thinking I’m not who I say I am. I finally made it back to this family, and now I’m scared I’ll lose it all…”
Her voice cracked as she started crying harder, putting on a flawless act.
Mary’s heart broke watching her. She rubbed her daughter’s back and spoke gently. “Shh, baby, don’t cry. I believe you. Of course! believe you. You’re the daughter I worked so hard to find. No one’s allowed to doubt that, not even for a second.”
Viola stayed curled in her arms a little longer and let out a tiny breath.
As long as Mary was on her side, Roman could suspect her all he wanted.
But Angus…
Viola didn’t trust Roman to keep quiet around him. So the next morning, she went straight to the estate.
Angus had just finished breakfast. He was sitting back in a recliner, listening to his usual morning radio.
Viola came in all smiles. She poured him coffee, fluffed the pillows, and straightened the throw blanket around his lap. Her tone was soft, her words sweet, and it got him to smile just a bit.
“Grandpa, you’ve got to rest more. It’s the only way you’ll bounce back faster,” she said softly as she tucked the blanket tighter.
Angus nodded and gave her hand a light pat. His foggy eyes were warm. “You’re a sweet girl.”
Even though they weren’t that close yet, he did feel a sense of responsibility toward her. He’d missed over a decade of her life. Deep down, he wanted to make it up to her.
They chatted for a bit, but once Viola saw he was starting to tire, she stepped away and reminded the staff to look after him carefully.
She had just walked into the foyer when she heard hurried steps. A housekeeper came in and reported, “Ms. Charlotte, Mr. Haller’s arrived. He says he wants to see the master.”
Viola’s chest tightened. She immediately walked to the front, and sure enough, Roman was standing outside the old estate gate, a quiet aide behind him.
She quickly put on a welcoming smile, but stopped just inside the doorframe, keeping her feet squarely planted to block the entrance. “Mr. Haller? What a surprise. Unfortunately, Grandpa just fell asleep. His doctor said he needs complete rest. This really isn’t a good time for visitors. Maybe another day?”
Her voice stayed polite, but her stance left no doubt that she was not letting him in.
Roman saw straight through her. His face stayed calm. “Is that so? Then I’ll wait in the antechamber. Once he’s awake, I’ll just have a quick word and be on my way.”
“Mr. Haller,” Viola’s smile faded. Her voice cooled. “Grandpa’s health isn’t great. There’s no reason to interrupt his rest. Besides…”

She scanned him from head to toe, her tone sharp with just a hint of superiority. “I heard you used to work for the Guzmans back in the day? Grandpa helped you out of respect for your past. That’s why you’re where you are now. But you can’t keep using that history to insert yourself into things. People who know your background might call it loyalty. But those who don’t might assume you’re trying to take advantage of the Guzmans‘ name.”
The words landed hard. She was clearly accusing him of being an opportunist.
The aide behind Roman looked furious and started to step forward, but Roman held out his hand to stop him.
He stared at Viola. His eyes were cold and sharp. “Ms. Charlotte, you’re young, but you’ve got a sharp tongue. My relationship with your grandfather is not for you to criticize. If you’re trying to keep me out, is it because you’re afraid I’ll tell him what happened at the Steeles‘ party?”
A flicker of panic passed through Viola’s eyes. She clenched her teeth. “I have no idea what you’re talking about! I’m only thinking of Grandpa’s wellbeing! Mr. Haller, please leave!”
