Noelle's expression shifted at once. Sebastian is having another flare-up!
He'd been confined to a wheelchair after being poisoned. The poison had accumulated in his system, and every month the flare-up brought him unbearable agony.
Each attack only pushed the poison deeper into his body.
"I've already called Mr. Lucas! He's on his way! He should arrive in roughly thirty minutes!"
Sebastian's flare-ups struck without warning, leaving everyone unprepared. Even Lucas Steele would take some time to reach the manor.
Duo and Primo stared anxiously at the closed door. During every flare-up, Sebastian lost control of himself and posed a danger to those around him, so he always locked himself away and refused to let anyone inside.
"I'm going in to stay with him," a calm yet resolute voice declared.
"Mrs. Menzie?" Duo and Primo both looked at Noelle in shock. They hadn't even noticed when she'd approached them.
"He's alone in there. I'm going in. Open the door."
"Mr. Menzie's condition is critical right now. He may hurt people during a flare-up. It's far too dangerous for you to go in," Primo said with a frown.
Duo was already on edge and snapped, "Just leave Mr. Menzie be for now. Don't make a bad situation even worse."
Noelle was too consumed with worry to argue. She snatched the key right from Duo's hand, unlocked the door, stepped inside, and slammed it closed.
She moved so quickly that Duo didn't have time to react. The key was already gone from his palm.
He stared at the door, then at his empty hand.
Wait… How did she get the key?
...
Noelle stood inside the room.
The curtains were all drawn, plunging the room into darkness. The man sat by the window, his back taut with exhaustion and strain.
He was clearly in unbearable pain. He was hunched forward, his body folded nearly in half, trembling violently.
Noelle's heart plummeted. She slowly walked toward him.
"Get out!" he screamed, his voice raw and ragged.
Noelle ignored him and kept walking.
Sebastian's eyes blazed with fury. He suddenly grabbed her wrist.
"I told you to get—"
His grip was so strong it felt as though he might snap her bones. Noelle hissed in pain.
When he realized it was her, the anger in his eyes froze. He released her wrist in a sudden, sharp motion.
A dark bruise was already circling her pale wrist.
"Get out," he growled.
"I won't." Noelle not only refused to leave but knelt beside him. "How could I leave you like this? Honey, I'm worried about you."
She had called him "honey"…
Said she was worried about him.
Sebastian's large hand, resting on his knee, curled into a tight fist.
"What did you call me?"
"We're married. It's only natural I call you honey."
"We're not legally married."
"But we are married. I've decided you're the one for me."
Sebastian's thin lips twitched as if he wanted to speak, but a sharp, searing pain pierced his chest. He grimaced in agony.
"What's wrong? Does it hurt that badly? I'll get you some water!"
Noelle quickly stood up, grabbed the cup by the bed, and poured water from the dispenser. With her back to Sebastian, she slipped a small pill into the water.
The pill dissolved at once, leaving no color or taste.
She turned back around, knelt beside him, and brought the cup to his lips.
"Your lips look so dry. Drink some water, you'll feel better."
He didn't take it, instead fixing his intense gaze on her. "You're not scared of me like this?"
He knew he must look awful, his veins bulging, covered in sweat, and consumed by fury. How was she not afraid?
Noelle held the cup steady, held his probing gaze and tilted her head. "Why would I be scared of you, honey? You're so handsome. How could I ever be scared?"
Sebastian didn't buy it.
Obviously joking.
Heh.
Little liar.
Rest on her? No way!
