Noelle thought back to when she was little. Willow used to pick Viola up from school all the time, and Viola would proudly show off, telling everyone that was her mom.
She had always just stood off to the side, watching.
Now… She had a mom picking her up too.
“I’ll get in first.”
Noelle nodded to Eleanor and the others, then pulled open the back door and got in.
Mary quickly returned to her seat.
The car pulled away smoothly from campus.
Mary glanced at Noelle’s blank profile in the rearview mirror and tried to make conversation. “Let’s go have lunch first, that place we went to last time. You seemed to like it. After that, I’ll take you to the company. There should be enough time.”
Noelle nodded. “Okay.”
Mary hesitated, then said, “About yesterday… what happened on that film set. I heard about it.”
There was real worry in her voice. “You silly girl, why didn’t you tell me when you were bullied? I … I may not have done things right. before, but now I can stand up for you too. That Veronica and her sister, I won’t let them get away with it.”
Hearing the genuine protectiveness in Mary’s tone, something hard inside Noelle seemed to be brushed, stirring the faintest ripple.
She turned her gaze forward, looking at Mary’s back.
Her eyes were about to soften.
‘But Noey,” Mary suddenly changed direction, “you should really stay away from places like the studio complex and sets. They’re nessy, with all kinds of people mixed together. It’s chaotic, not suitable for you. This time, you were lucky. What if next time you ‘un into someone even more unreasonable?”
Voelle’s eyes cooled, and she didn’t respond.
‘And that friend of yours, the Steeles‘ boy, Lucas.” Mary continued. “I asked around. He’s a well–known playboy. He wastes his days and won’t do any honest work. His reputation isn’t good. You hanging around with him really worries me. Listen to me and stay away from him in the future. You’re a Guzman. You shouldn’t mix with that kind of person.”
Noelle’s lips pressed into a thin line.
“And there’s also…”
Mary watched Noelle’s expression through the mirror, hesitated, but still said it, her tone clearly disapproving and dismissive. “Your… husband, Sebastian.
“I looked into him too. His family situation is a mess, and he was sent off to Riverdale when he was young. He was even disabled for a time, and his methods are ruthless. He’s not a good match.

“And you two still haven’t even registered your marriage, right? What kind of situation is that? A girl staying with a man without a proper status? People will talk, and it won’t be nice. Noey, with your conditions, you could easily find someone better, more suitable. Do you want me to introduce a few good candidates to you-”
“That’s enough.”
Noelle finally cut her off. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was icy, instantly dropping the temperature inside the car.
Mary’s words caught in her throat. She looked at Noelle in confusion, not understanding how things had suddenly gone wrong.
“Mrs. Guzman,” Noelle no longer called her Mom, her tone distant, “my friends and my partner aren’t for you to judge.
“I know exactly who Lucas is. He’s loyal, and he genuinely protects me like a sister, far better than some so–called family who only
talk.
“And I know even more what Sebastian is like. He respects me, cherishes me, and he’s the person I chose to spend my life with. How we live, whether we have that piece of paper or not, is our business. It has nothing to do with outsiders, and even less with so- called family background.
“As for whether the studio complex is chaotic or not, Mrs. Guzman, the place I grew up in was far messier than that. If you say the people there are all kinds of riffraff, then what am I? To me, they’re just people working hard to make a living. Have you been in your ivory tower for so long that you’ve forgotten how the real world works?”
Each sentence hit harder than the last, cutting into Mary’s heart like knives.
Mary’s face gradually turned pale. Her hands gripping the steering wheel tightened until her knuckles turned white.
She hadn’t expected Noelle to react so strongly, so… unyielding.
She was clearly just worried about her, thinking for her sake.
Feeling wronged, Mary’s voice trembled as it rose. “H–how can you talk to me like this? I’m your mother. Everything I do is for your own good.”
“For my own good?” Noelle gave a short laugh. “Using ‘for your own good‘ as an excuse to interfere in my life, judge my friends, and belittle the person I love. Is that what you call good? Sorry, I can’t accept it.”
