Theodore glanced at the soup, frowned, and waved it off. “I’m not drinking it. I ate at… I ate quite a bit outside today. I’m too full”
He’d eaten far more than usual at dinner with Sebastian and the others, and he still felt uncomfortably full.
“This soup was specially prepared for you,” Tabitha said softly. “There are several rare medicinal ingredients in it. The doctor said having a bowl before bed is best for your health…”
Theodore shook his head again. “I said I’m not drinking it.”
Standing to the side, Ethan looked at the almost childishly stubborn Theodore, then took the tray from Tabitha, “Grandpa, Tabitha’s right. This soup is good for you. Drink it, then go to sleep.”
Ethan had always taken Theodore’s health seriously. If Theodore refused, Ethan knew he wouldn’t sleep tonight. “Alright, alright. You’re always fussing,” Theodore muttered.
He took the bowl, wrinkled his nose, and drank the warm soup in a few quick gulps, like medicine.
Watching him finish, Tabitha began shaking even harder. Her face turned pale, cold sweat beading on her forehead.
Ethan set the empty bowl back on the tray and looked at Tabitha sharply. “Tabitha, are you cold? Why are you shaking?”
“N–no! Mr. Ethan, I–I’m just feeling a bit unwell…” Tabitha hurriedly lowered her head, her voice trembling, barely daring to meet his
eyes.
Just then.
“Pfft!”
Theodore’s body suddenly convulsed. He violently spat out a large mouthful of dark red blood.
“Grandpa!!” Ethan’s face changed instantly as he grabbed the swaying old man. “What’s happening?”
Theodore clutched his chest, his face turning ashen in seconds. Another surge of blood rose up. He pointed at the now–empty soup bowl, eyes wide, lips trembling, unable to form a complete sentence. “The soup… the soup…”
“Doctor!! Call a doctor now!!” Ethan roared toward the door, his eyes sharp as knives, then whipped around to stare at Tabitha, who had collapsed to the floor, deathly pale. “What was in that soup?”
Tabitha was terrified out of her mind, collapsed on the ground, and sobbing, unable to say a single word.
“No need to call a doctor.”
A cold voice came from the doorway.
Royce and Olivia entered side by side. Behind them followed several men in black suits with hard, expressionless faces, who quickly blocked off the exits.
Royce looked at Theodore, who was vomiting blood and barely breathing. There was no panic on his face, only a cruel calm.
“Ethan, stop shouting,” Royce said clearly in the dead–silent living room. “Even if a doctor came, it would be useless. This poison was prepared just for him. There’s no cure.”

Ethan stared at his Uncle Royce and Aunt Olivia in disbelief, his pupils contracting with shock and rage. “Y–you poisoned him?!”
“We did this for your own good, Ethan,” Royce sneered, greed and viciousness flashing in his eyes. “That old thing has always had his heart set on Sebastian, even though he kicked him out! He even went to see him in secret today. He treats Sebastian like a real grandson. What are we to him? What are the Menzies‘ assets to him? Some toy he can just hand over?”
He stepped closer, his voice growing more heated. “We can’t wait anymore! We have to act before he makes a will and leaves everything to Sebastian. Only if he dies will the Menzies‘ wealth truly fall into your hands, into our family’s hands!”
“For my good?” Ethan laughed bitterly, his voice cold as he supported his grandfather, whose breathing was fading fast. “Killing your own family to seize the inheritance is for my good? Uncle Royce, Aunt Olivia, you’ve really opened my eyes!”
