Maisy had been eavesdropping from her room. When she heard that, she stepped out and retorted, her tone thick with sarcasm. “Seriously! Some people think that just because they can catch a chicken or spear a fish, they’re suddenly experts at everything. Saving a life isn’t a game! If you don’t have what it takes, don’t pretend you do–you’ll just end up hurting everyone, including yourself!”

Her words jabbed at Noelle and implied that even if Noelle really had saved someone, it was just dumb luck–or she’d acted recklessly.

Steve listened to everyone, then glanced at Noelle. He couldn’t believe it either. “The person who handled that snakebite was really skilled. I just can’t picture someone her age doing that.”

He was just being honest.

But at Noey’s age, it really did seem unlikely that she had saved Benjamin.

Maisy caught that and looked even more smug, thinking Steve was on her side. “See? I told you, it couldn’t be her!”

“Noelle, if it wasn’t you, just say so. Why act like you didn’t hear us? Are you really trying to steal the credit? You wouldn’t do that, would you?”

Noelle closed her book, her eyes cool as they flicked over Maisy.

Truth was, she had zero interest in arguing.

But Maisy was clueless and just wouldn’t quit pushing her luck.

“What if,” Noelle said, her voice clear and even, giving nothing away, “I really was the one who saved him?”

Maisy let out a loud, mocking laugh. She folded her arms, and tilted her chin up higher, looking at Noelle like she was crazy. “You? Noelle, don’t kid yourself. You want to take the credit for this? Do you even know how dangerous a snakebite is? You know what to do in a situation like that? If you actually saved him, I’ll quit this show right now and never come back. I mean it!”

She sounded totally certain, like she was daring Noelle to prove her wrong.

Everyone went silent. Nobody expected Maisy to go that far. Jeffrey tried to smooth things over. “Maisy, come on, you don’t have to go that far…”

Noelle just cocked her head at Maisy, like she was weighing something, then replied, slow and casual, “Oh… well, you should probably stick around for now.”

“What?” Maisy didn’t get it.

“I said,” Noelle repeated, still calm, but with a kind of quiet authority, “you should at least finish filming this episode. Otherwise, Mr. Salinger will be stuck looking for a replacement at the last minute. That’s a hassle.”

With that, she looked away, ignored everyone else, and strolled off with her book.

Maisy stared at her retreating back, so angry she could barely breathe.

Watching Noelle walk away, Maisy just convinced herself that Noelle was bluffing. She simply threw out that line to dodge the dare.

“Hmph, I knew she was faking!” Maisy spat at Noelle’s back in frustration.

Steve watched the scene, and the little bit of doubt he’d had after Noelle said “what if it was me?” vanished.

Young people love to talk big, he thought. When Maisy pushes her, she bragged. And then, she tries to find a way to step down when she can’t follow through.

He shook his head, and his opinion of Noelle dropped another notch.

Lack of skill is fixable–you can learn. Lacking of character ‘s a whole other problem.

The crowd drifted away.

Benjamin and Samuel thanked Steve again before heading home.

Meanwhile, Terrence and Mick caught up to Noelle just as she was about to head to her room.

“Dr. Kain!” Terrence rubbed his hands together, keeping his voice low but unable to hide his excitement. “It was you, right? You’re the one who saved Benjamin, aren’t you?”

Mick stood next to him, a small, knowing smile in his eyes.
