Alina pointed at Noelle. Tears finally burst from her eyes. “But what about her?” she cried. “The moment she was born, she took everything from me! Dad, Mom, Grandpa–everyone only cares about her. She was the baby the whole family had been waiting for. Everyone adored her. And me?” Her voice shook. “What was I? Just the older sister. The one who had to give in. It was her responsibility to care for her younger sister.
She took a shaky breath. “That day at the hospital, Mom held her and never even looked at me. Grandpa and the uncles were busy picking her name. The nanny kept saying how beautiful she was.” Her voice grew hoarse. “But no one remembered I was only five. I needed attention too. I needed a hug too.”
Her tone turned sharp with pain. “So I thought, if she wasn’t there, things would go back to normal. Maybe Mom and Dad would look at me again. Even just once.” Her hands trembled. “So I took her away. I only meant to leave her somewhere people would find her. I just wanted her gone for a little while. I–I never thought it would turn out like that.”
The confession came twenty years too late. It carried childish jealousy, hurt feelings, and a terrible mistake made by a five–year–old.
The living room fell silent. Only Alina’s muffled sobs could be heard.
Mary stood frozen. She had never thought of it that way.
Angus closed his eyes, regret heavy on his face.
“So that’s your reason for throwing away your sister?” Noelle asked quietly, staring at her. “Because you felt ignored? Because it seemed unfair?”
Alina’s strength seemed to drain away. She lowered her head. “Yes, I’m awful, selfish, and cruel. Are you happy now?”
‘I’m not.” Noelle stepped forward, her eyes blazing. “You only remember the pain you felt at the age of five.” But have you ever thought about the baby you left on that cold bench? She was taken by strangers. She grew up in a cold home. She was bullied, gnored, and forced to struggle just to survive.” Her gaze never left Alina. “And while she suffered, the sister who abandoned her ived comfortably at home. She attended the best schools. Live the best life. Complaining about the pressure of being the eldest daughter.”
Each word hit like a blow. This impact was felt not only by Alina, but also by everyone present in the room.
“You think life was unfair to you?” Noelle gave a cold laugh. “But was it fair to me?”
She had suffered abuse for twenty years. Was that fair?
She had been separated from her real parents for twenty years. Was that fair?
Could her pain disappear just because Alina once felt jealous?
Noelle stayed calm, but her voice trembled slightly.
Sebastian stepped closer and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
Noey had suffered too much.
Anger burned in his chest as he looked at Alina. “Ms. Guzman,” he said coldly, “A five–year–old’s jealousy might be childish. But what about the twenty years after that? You knew Viola was a fake. You had chances to reveal the truth, but you stayed silent. You even tried to stop Noey from coming home.

“You enjoyed everything your family gave you,” he continued coldly, “Yet you ignored the sister who was left out in the world. That kind of selfishness and indifference is far worse than the childish jealousy you had at five.”
His words were sharp, like a surgeon’s blade, cutting open the darkness Alina had tried to hide behind her guilt.
Alina swayed. Her face turned even paler.
Sebastian then looked at the others. “You may have heard about the hardships Noey went through all these years. But hearing about it isn’t the same as understanding it. She fought to survive on her own. She never relied on you for anything.” He paused and took Noelle’s slightly cold hand. “Now that she’s finally home, all she wants is simple family love.”
He paused a little and took Noelle’s hand. “Not a mother who favors someone else. Not a sister who schemes against her. And not being dragged into these ugly secrets from the past. That isn’t fair to her.”
