Steve rubbed his hands together. His face looked humble, like a student asking for advice. It was nothing like the way he used to look down on Noelle.
Noelle gave a small nod. “Go ahead, Dr. Mayer.”
After finishing her work, Noelle walked out of the hospital. The sky had already grown dim.
A black car was parked by the road. It looked simple at first glance, but the quiet luxury was hard to hide. Sebastian lowered the window and waved to her.
Noelle walked over, opened the door, and got in. Warm air and his familiar clean scent wrapped around her at once.
“Tired?” Sebastian asked. He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face that the wind had blown loose.
“I’m fine.” Noelle leaned back in her seat and relaxed.
“Lucas set up a dinner tonight,” Sebastian said as he started the car. “At the restaurant we usually go to. He said the dinner is meant to help calm your nerves. Want to go?”
Noelle Kain arched a brow. “Calm my nerves? What would I be nervous about?”
Sebastian smiled faintly. “He said the internet has been a mess lately. He’s worried you might feel upset, so he insisted on doing something.”
Noelle smiled. “Alright. I’ll go.”
When they arrived at the restaurant, Lucas was already there. He was leaning lazily against the couch, playing on his phone.
When he saw Noelle and Sebastian walk in, he slowly stood up. His sharp eyes lifted slightly, and his voice carried its usual lazy tone. “Oh, Noey’s here? Come on in. Sit down. We’ve been waiting for you two.”
He ignored the Guzmans and the online drama, as if none of it had ever happened.
Soon, the dishes were served. Lucas noticed a plate of garlic shrimp on the table. Without thinking much, he picked one up and dropped it onto Noelle’s plate. “Here. Your favorite.“”
Noelle looked at the shrimp, then at Lucas’s face–the kind that clearly hinted he did that on the passing. She couldn’t help smiling. “Mr. Lucas is being so polite today. What’s going on?”
Lucas snorted. “Cut it out. Since when have I ever been rude to you?”
Actually, he just felt a little bad for Noey.
Those things online had made his heart ache just reading them.
It was strange, really. All three of them grew up without a happy family.
So tonight, Lucas felt especially sorry toward her. He even planned to peel shrimp for her.
Normally, he would ask Sebastian to peel shrimp for him.

Before he could say anything else, a fork suddenly reached over and took the shrimp from Noelle’s plate.
Sebastian calmly ate it. After swallowing, he looked at Lucas and said in a flat voice, “She can do it on her own.”
Lucas fell silent.
Right. Jealous already.
He rolled his eyes and decided not to argue with this overly possessive man.

Sebastian calmly put on a pair of gloves and started peeling shrimp. One after another, he placed the peeled shrimp neatly into the small plate beside Noelle. His movements were smooth and practiced, as if he had done it hundreds of times.
Noelle comfortably enjoyed his service. From time to time, she also picked up a piece of food and placed it onto his plate.
The way the two of them interacted was natural and close, almost like they had their own little world.
Lucas watched the couple across from him and suddenly got jealous.
He took a long drink and thought to himself. Those two… seriously. Way too lovey–dovey.
The meal went fairly well. Lucas kept joking around. Noelle replied now and then. Sebastian spoke the least, but the atmosphere never felt awkward.
After dinner, Lucas walked them to the door. When Noelle and Sebastian left, he stood there for a while, looking at the bright neon lights outside. Once the lively noise faded, the familiar empty feeling crept back in.
He tugged at the corner of his mouth, feeling a little bored.
“Take me to the usual place,” he said as he opened the car door and spoke to the driver.
The “usual place” was another bar that he often visited. The atmosphere there was wilder and more to his taste.
He walked straight to his reserved booth. The manager, who recognized him, quickly came over with two beautiful women.
Lucas leaned back lazily on the soft couch. He drank slowly, listening to the pounding music and watching people dancing wildly on the floor. But the irritation in his chest didn’t fade.
The women beside him were smart. One poured drinks, and another lit his cigarette, both saying flattering things without meaning much.
