Jaylee had planned to let Lucas bring it up first. She wanted to act reserved and let him chase after her a bit. Days passed, but Lucas never mentioned it, so she finally had to bring it up herself.
Lucas paused on the other end of the call. Then he gave a short laugh. His tone was neutral. “Alright, I’ll check with them.”
Jaylee squeezed her phone, her heart racing.
She had done it.
She knew as long as Lucas was willing to take her into his circle, she could hold her own.
Soon, the people with real power, the true elite, would all know her name.
When it came to Lucas, she thought about his lazy attitude and felt a flicker of contempt.
Someone like him really wasn’t good enough for her.
Lucas hung up and called Sebastian.
At Melrose Manor, Sebastian sat up in bed.
Noelle was curled in his arms, wearing light pink pajamas with bunny ears on the hood. She was sound asleep.
Noelle had been up until three in the morning making medicine. When Sebastian carried her to bed, she was so tired she could barely mutter that she was exhausted before falling asleep.
Sebastian didn’t usually stay in bed, but he didn’t want to wake her. He enjoyed having her close for a little longer.
His phone buzzed.
Sebastian checked the caller ID, then answered quietly. “Yeah?”
Lucas’s voice came through, slow and lazy. “Still not up? Where’s Noey?”
“She’s asleep.” Sebastian looked down at Noelle. “What do you want?”
“It’s about yesterday. Jaylee wants to see you and Noey today and apologize in person.” Lucas paused. “If you’re free, I’ll bring her
over at noon.”
The two men kept their voices low, but Noelle was a light sleeper. She opened her eyes and asked, “Who is it?”
“Lucas.” Sebastian put the phone to her ear.
Noelle was still waking up when Lucas repeated, “Jaylee wants to meet you two. Should I bring her over at noon?”
Noelle’s sleepy eyes brightened right away.
“Sure.”

She sat up, her voice clear. “Bring her! Noon is good!”
Sebastian watched her, noticing the sly spark in her eyes. He raised an eyebrow.
“What did Noey say?” Lucas sounded confused.
“She said yes.” Sebastian hung up and looked at Noelle. “Why are you so excited?”

Noelle, still wrapped in her fluffy pajamas, tilted her head and smiled cryptically. “I have to see what kind of girl she is. Vet her a little. You know Lucas. His taste in women is terrible.”
Sebastian saw how eager she looked, how her eyes sparkled. He suddenly felt Lucas might be in for trouble today.
“Don’t go overboard.” He pinched her cheek.
“Relax.” Noelle blinked. “I know what I’m doing.”
At Melrose Manor, Jaylee stood at the entrance to the neighborhood.
She stared at the luxury homes hidden among the trees. She was stunned.
She knew Lucas had money. She knew his friends must be wealthy, too. She just never expected this.
There were rows of exotic mansions, each with its own private yard and pool. The hedges were trimmed perfectly. Expensive cars lined the driveways, the kinds she had only seen in magazines.
The air itself smelled of money.
Jaylee took a deep breath and stood up straight.
She was going in.
She would become part of this world.
Lucas and Jaylee walked up to one of the houses. Staff waited at the door. When they saw Lucas, they bowed. “Mr. Lucas. Ms. Wood.”
Jaylee gave a small nod, just right for the moment.
The door opened. In the living room, a man sat on the couch.
He wore a simple black shirt with the sleeves pushed up. He held a file and was reading it.
Sunlight streamed through the windows, lighting him in a soft gold glow.
