The dagger felt cold in her hand. Under the dim yellow light, the blade gave off a sharp, icy gleam.
“Noey! Don’t!” Mary screamed, her voice breaking..
Viola’s
eyes lit up at once.
There was excitement in them. Madness. And the thrill of long–buried hatred finally finding a way out.
“Yes. That’s it!” her voice trembled with excitement as she leaned forward, almost pressing her face close to Noelle’s. “Do it. Go on. Let me see how low you can go. Let me see how far the great Noelle will fall for a woman who doesn’t deserve to be a mother!”
Noelle held the dagger still. She didn’t move.
One second passed, and Viola’s smile stiffened.
“Do it,” she said coldly. “What? Having second thoughts?”
She raised her gun and aimed it at Mary’s head again.
“Three-”
“Two-

Spurt!
The blade sank into flesh.
The sound was soft. But in the small room, it echoed clearly.
Viola froze.
She stared at Noelle.
At the dagger buried deep in Noelle’s arm. At the blood sliding down the blade and dripping to the floor.
Noelle didn’t cry out. She didn’t dodge. She didn’t even frown.
She just stood there, holding the dagger, looking at Viola.
Her face was empty.
No pain. No fear. No pleading.
Only her eyes–still and quiet, like dead water.
Viola stood there for a few seconds.

She looked at the dagger. At the blood. At Noelle’s calm face.
Then-

She burst into laughter bending over as tears came out. Her whole body shook. She almost dropped the
gun.
“Good! Good! Good!” she gasped, saying it three times as she struggled to breathe. “Noelle, look at you now! Look at you!”
She straightened, wiped the tears from her eyes, and stepped closer, studying Noelle’s face.
“You know,” she said, still smiling, but her voice carried something strange, “I’ve been jealous of you since we were kids. Your face. Your attitude, like nothing matters. The way everyone revolves around you.”
She reached out and tapped the knife stuck in Noelle’s arm.
Noelle’s brow twitched slightly, but she made no sound.
Viola smiled wider.
“Does it hurt?” she asked softly, almost gently. “Of course it does. But you won’t say it, right? That’s who you are. You’d rather die than admit pain.”
She pulled her hand back and tilted her head.
“But I want to hear it.”
She raised the gun again, aiming at Mary.
“One more,” she said. “Your leg.”
Mary struggled like she had gone mad. “You monster! You heartless monster! Noey, don’t listen to her! I’m begging you!”
“Bang!”
Another shot hit the ground near Mary’s foot, sending dust and debris flying.
“The next one hits her knee,” Viola said with a sweet smile. “Your choice.”
Noelle looked at her for a long time.
Then she bent down and pulled the dagger out of her arm.
Blood poured out at once. Her face turned even paler.
But her expression didn’t change.

She gripped the knife and aimed it at her own leg.
“Thud.”
The blade went in again.
This time, she couldn’t hold it back. A low grunt slipped out.
Soft. Almost too quiet to hear.
Viola heard it.
“Hahaha!”
She laughed even harder, almost doubling over.

“You made a sound! You did! Noelle feels pain too! Noelle can cry out!” she shouted, laughing wildly. “I finally heard it! I finally did!”
Mary collapsed on the floor, staring at the knife in Noelle’s leg and at her pale, bloodless face.
It was like all the strength had been drained from her body.
“Noey…” her voice was barely a whisper. “Noey…”
Noelle didn’t look at her.
She only looked at Viola and said calmly, as if talking about the weather, “Is that enough?”
