“Hey, what do you think?” he said in a low, secretive voice. “Could he be from some big family on that nameless island? If we saved him, could we trade him for Sebastian?”
Jasper glanced at him and let out a cold laugh. “You’ve been watching too many shows.”
Lucas snorted. “What do you mean? Look at his clothes. No way he’s from a normal family. What if I just got lucky?”
“You think too highly of yourself.”
“Enough.”
Noelle spoke, calm and quiet.
Both men fell silent at once.
She bent down and picked up the boy. He was shockingly light, like dry sticks in her arms.
“Who he is doesn’t matter,” she said as she turned away, her voice steady and firm. “We’ll talk after he wakes up.”
She carried him into the cabin.
Lucas and Jasper exchanged a look. Both let out a short, cold laugh, then followed inside, still annoyed.
One minute.
Two minutes.
Five minutes.
Lucas yawned. “How long is he going to sleep?”
“Be quiet,” Jasper said coldly.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do.”
“What if you wake him?”
“1-”
“Stop arguing,” Noelle said.
Silence again.
Five more minutes passed.
The boy’s eyelashes trembled.
Then trembled again.
Suddenly, his eyes snapped open-

“Whoa!”
Lucas jumped back so fast he almost knocked over a cabinet. He clutched his chest, face pale. “That scared me! The kid opened his eyes like a zombie or something!”
The boy stared at the three faces leaning close to him. His pupils shrank. He scrambled backward, pressing hard against the wall. He looked like a cornered animal. His chest rose and fell fast. A soft, shaky whimper slipped from his throat.
“It’s okay,” Noelle said gently, moving a little closer. Her voice was soft and slow. “We found you at sea. You passed out. You’re on a boat now.”
The boy stared at her, silent.
Noelle didn’t rush him. She picked up a sandwich and held it out.
‘s eyes dropped to the sandwich. His throat moved as he swallowed.
dn’t take it.
e held it closer. “It’s safe. You haven’t eaten in two days.”
He looked at her for a few seconds. Then he suddenly reached out, grabbed the sandwich, and stuffed it into his mouth. He ate fast too fast–like he hadn’t eaten in days, like he was afraid someone might take it away.
leaned in, resting his chin on his hand as he watched. “Hey, slow down. No one’s taking it. What’s your name? Where do you live? How’d you end up out at sea?”
The boy paused for a second.
Then he shook his
“You don’t remember?”
He nodded.
“Nothing at all?”
Another nod.
Lucas widened his eyes and waved a hand in front of him. “Seriously? You hit your head or something? You forgot everything?”
The boy ignored him and kept eating.
Lucas wasn’t done. He reached out and tugged the boy’s hair. “Hey, talk, kid. What’s your name?”
The boy frowned. He slapped Lucas’s hand away–fast and hard–then quickly hid behind Noelle.
“Hiss-“Lucas rubbed the back of his hand. “That kid’s got some strength!”
and shot him a look.

Jasper leaned against the door, silent the whole time. His eyes stayed on the boy, scanning him from head to toe. Then they settled on the boy’s eyes.
They moved too fast.
Too sharp for a child who remembered nothing.
“What’s your name?” Jasper suddenly asked.
No response.
“Where’s your home?”
Still nothing.
your parents?”
stared at him, his voice turning colder. “You understand me.”
The boy stayed behind Noelle, head down, not moving.
pas leaned over, looking annoyed. “Great. Ask him anything, and you get nothing. Playing dumb pretty well, though.”
Jasper let out a cold laugh and stepped forward.
“Acting stupid won’t help,” he said, voice icy. “Talk, or I’ll toss you back into the ocean. There are sharks around here. A kid your size? You wouldn’t last a second.”
The boy’s body stiffened for a split second.
But he still said nothing. He just leaned closer to Noelle.
Noelle placed a hand gently on his head.
“That’s enough,” she said, looking at Jasper. “Don’t scare him.”
Jasper met her eyes. After a moment, he said nothing more.
Lucas smirked from the side. “Oh wow, hit a wall, huh? He’s got Noey protecting him. Who do you think you
are?”
Jasper shot him a cold look and ignored him.
Noelle lowered her gaze to the boy beside her.
He had finished the sandwich. Now he sat quietly, head down, as if thinking.
But from where she stood, she could see it.
His eyes were still moving. Subtle. Careful. Watching everything.”
