Lucas took a deep breath and walked inside, looking ready to sacrifice his life.
A while later, he came back out.
Lucas looked even worse than Jasper. Both eyes were swollen shut, as if someone had smacked him across the face with a frying pan from both sides. He was filthy from head to toe.
The two looked at each other and burst out laughing at the exact same time.
Lucas laughed first.
Lucas clicked his tongue. "I wanted to say this earlier. You look ugly as hell right now."
Jasper snorted. "Look who's talking. You look like a damn panda."
Right then, Noelle walked over.
The two instantly straightened their backs, trying to project an aura of strength through their swollen eyes.
"You two..." Noelle looked at their swollen faces and fell silent for a moment.
"Ah, it's nothing, really!" Lucas waved his hands immediately. "Just a few minor injuries. We advanced successfully! Noey, don't worry about us. It doesn't hurt at all. Right, Jasper?"
As he spoke, he slapped Jasper hard across the chest.
Jasper nearly suffered internal injuries from the hit.
Why the hell is he hitting me instead of himself?
Noelle pressed her lips together and skipped the pointless comments. She directly pulled out a small porcelain bottle from her sleeve. The moment she removed the stopper, a cool medicinal fragrance spread through the air.
"You two, come here," she said calmly.
Lucas and Jasper exchanged a glance and obediently moved closer.
Noelle dipped her fingertips into the ointment and smoothly spread it over their swollen eyelids.
The ointment melted instantly on contact, carrying a refreshing coolness that immediately soothed the burning pain.
"Thanks," Jasper muttered quietly, warmth spreading through his chest.
Lucas grinned too. "Man, Noey really knows how to take care of us."
"Enough talking. Go get your tokens already." Noelle withdrew her hand. "I heard the Guard Department still has a third trial."
Sure enough, after they received their temporary tokens, the examiner announced that out of the 50 people who passed today, only 10 would remain. The third trial would be a group battle starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
The Nightfall Circle arranged temporary guest rooms for everyone staying overnight.
Following a servant leading the way, Noelle arrived at an elegant courtyard. But when she pushed the door open, she unexpectedly found Shirley already sitting inside.
The bodyguard lowered his head, voice emotionless. "Ms. Christine said all Four Great Families are closely watching this year's trials. It wouldn't look good to interfere directly. With your abilities, you'll definitely enter the Medicine Department tomorrow fair and square."
Shirley clenched her teeth as her chest rose and fell violently. Even though she hated it, she knew her aunt's reasoning made sense, so all she could do was stomp her foot angrily. "It'd better happen that way!"
...
At the same time, inside a dark room somewhere among the Four Great Families.
The curtains were drawn shut so tightly that not a single ray of light could enter.
A bodyguard stepped forward and said respectfully, "Sir, Ms. Kain passed the selection and entered the Medicine Department directly."
A little boy sat on the bed with his back facing the bodyguard, his face hidden from view. Only his thin, frail silhouette could be seen.
"Got it."
The boy's voice was soft with the faint rasp of lingering illness, yet strangely calm.
"I'll take my leave." The bodyguard quietly backed out and gently shut the door behind him.
The room returned to dead silence once more.
Only after a very long time did the little boy slowly turn around.
