Grinding her teeth, Shirley walked away.

Up on the platform, the old man in gray robes announced the start of the trials.

First came the Guard Department’s group battle. Fifty candidates stepped into the open area at the center of the plaza. Some cracked their knuckles eagerly, some looked pale with nerves, and some secretly wrapped cloth strips around their hands.

Lucas and Jasper stood among the crowd back-to-back, forming a small defensive circle.

The two of them usually couldn’t stand each other, but now, they had no choice but to fight side-by-side.

Everyone around them sized up their opponents with hostile eyes like a pack of wolves testing one another.

Today, Lucas had deliberately straightened out his floral shirt and buttoned the final two remaining buttons. Even wrinkled up, at least it covered the white tank top underneath.

Shirley sat in the front row below the platform, her gaze sweeping through the crowd before quickly locking onto Lucas and Jasper.

She knew those two were Noelle’s friends. Yesterday in the courtyard, the guy in the floral shirt had even spoken up against her for Noelle’s sake.

A faint smile curled at her lips as she crooked her finger. One of the black-clothed bodyguards immediately bent down beside her.

“Tell our people in there,” she whispered, pointing toward Lucas and Jasper, “the one in the floral shirt and the one-eyed guy. Beat them as hard as possible.”

The bodyguard nodded and quietly withdrew.

The bell sounded, and the group battle began.

Lucas immediately seized the opening and drove a kick into the back of the giant’s knee from the side. The bald man crashed down onto one knee with a heavy thud.

Jasper spun around and drove a punch directly into the man’s temple. The giant’s eyes rolled back before he collapsed face-first onto the ground.

Two more people charged in immediately after, attacking from both sides.

The man groaned painfully and staggered back two steps.

Jasper instantly rushed forward, kicking down the one on the left before smashing a fist into the face of the one on the right. Blood exploded from the guy’s nose as he dropped into a crouch, clutching his face.

The two of them worked together flawlessly. One lured, one struck. One kicked, one smashed. It looked like they’d practiced together thousands of times before.

Several of Shirley’s hired fighters nearby saw that scene and suddenly slowed their steps, hesitating over whether to approach anymore.

Breathing heavily, Lucas flashed Jasper a grín. His swollen, bruised face made the smile look absurdly ridiculous. “We actually work pretty damn well together.”
