The voices gradually faded as the group turned onto another fork in the road and quickly disappeared into the fog.
Noelle stood frozen in place, her face white as paper.
Lucas didn't look much better. His lips trembled before he finally forced out a sentence. "Timothy... were they talking about Timothy?"
Noelle said nothing and immediately sprinted down the mountain. Lucas froze for a second before hurriedly chasing after her.
...
The square was already packed with people.
A sea of black crowded heads filled the plaza as endless whispers and chatter spread through the crowd.
The banners of the Four Great Families snapped loudly in the morning wind. Beneath the flagpoles stood rows of black-clothed Nightfall Circle guards with long blades hanging at their waists, their expressions cold and emotionless.
A wooden platform had been built in the center of the square, and several pillars stood on top of it with three people tied to them.
Timothy was tied to the middle pillar. His graying hair hung messily over his forehead, his face bruised black-and-blue with dried blood still staining the corner of his mouth.
Several parts of his clothes had been torn apart, exposing old scars underneath.
But his back remained perfectly straight, his chin lifted high, his eyes fixed ahead without lowering his head.
Elsa was tied to the pillar on his right. Her hair was disheveled, her clothes ripped, and her face covered in tear stains.
Her head stayed lowered, shoulders trembling slightly, but she never made a sound.
Zane was tied to the far-left pillar. His injuries looked even worse than Timothy's. His left eye was swollen completely shut, and a deep split at the corner of his mouth dripped blood down his chin.
But he gritted his teeth and remained silent.
The crowd below pointed at them while talking among themselves.
"So those are the Covingtons? They look pretty honest to me. Why would they hide outsiders?"
"You can never judge a person by appearances! Who knows what outsiders sneaking in are planning to do?"
"I heard the outsider is the new girl from the Medicine Department, Noelle. The really talented doctor."
"Doesn't matter how talented she is. An outsider is still an outsider! The island's rules can't be broken. All outsiders deserve to die!"
On the raised platform, Christine stood and walked forward.
Today, she wore a dark-purple satin robe with her hair pinned high using several gold hairpins, making her look elegant, noble, and overwhelmingly imposing.
It was a newspaper from the outside world. The paper was snow-white with crisp, elegant printing, and the words were perfectly clear.
Pointing at one line in the paper, she read aloud, "Noelle, second daughter of the Guzmans in Kingstowne. She has extraordinary medical talent and is famous throughout the city."
She turned the newspaper around for the crowd to see.
Printed on the paper was a photo of Noelle.
Even from far away, without seeing the details clearly, anyone could recognize her outline and aura at a glance.
"This is Noelle's true identity." Christine folded the newspaper away again, her voice growing heavier. "She isn't an ordinary person. She's from the outside world, the second daughter of the Guzmans from Kingstowne. She illegally snuck onto the island, infiltrated the Nightfall Circle, and came with evil intentions. The Covingtons knew she was an outsider, yet instead of reporting her, they hid her, sheltered her inside their home, and even recommended her into the Nightfall Circle. Their crime is worse, and they deserve execution!"
"Execute them! Execute them!" Someone in the crowd started shouting, and more people quickly joined in. The chants kept growing louder until the sound became deafening.
Timothy slowly lifted his head and looked at Christine on the platform. His voice was hoarse, but perfectly clear. "Ms. Duncan, I did know Ms. Kain was an outsider, but I don't regret letting her in."
The chanting below instantly quieted for a moment.
"Ms. Kain cured my wife's legs." Timothy's voice echoed across the square, every word rang crystal clear. "My wife was paralyzed for ten years. We saw every doctor on the island, and nobody could cure her. Then Ms. Kain arrived. After only a few needles, my wife regained feeling in her legs. Now she can already walk again."
He paused, his voice lowering but growing even firmer. "She may be an outsider, but she's not a bad person. She saved my life, healed my wife's legs, and saved my entire family. I've never met anyone better than her in all my life."
