Chapter 106 A Plan
Annelise yawned. “Snowball was supposed to be our standout guy, but now? He’s totally useless. We need a new pick. So over the next few days, keep an eye out. Either find a strong male nearby or bring some in from the surrounding groups.”
The High Priest took it all in. Her delivery was unt, but her point was sharp and clear. What had seemed messy now felt easy to manage.
He repeated something she’d said earlier.
“Hurting someone’s body? Sure. But breaking their heart? That’s brutal. What you’re doing to the chief… that’s exactly what it is. You’re about to expose her in front of everyone. What she wants most is gonna stab her right in the heart.
Annelise shook her head. “Sir, that’s what happens when you keep screwing people over.”
“What?”
She rolled her eyes. “Ugh, too philosophical? Whatever, forget it.”
The High Priest brushed that off. “Either way, you’re not lounging around for the next few days.”
“What for?”
“Time to train. I told you-I’m teaching you.”
Annelise groaned the second he said it.
She had just dealt with Snowball. Now it was training time? He really didn’t get the whole ‘I’m studying medicine, not combat’ thing, huh?
But then the High Priest flicked his lion tail and tapped her forehead with it.
“Those females know how to defend themselves You don’t.”
“Who says I don’t? I’ll stab someone with a needle. Way better than brute strength!”
“But what if you run into some beast with thick hide? What if your needle won’t pierce it Quick reflexes will keep you alive. You’re starting tomorrow.”
Annelise scoffed. “I’ve got to bring bunny back first.”
“Well, if you don’t train, then I’m not telling you where he is.”

Annelise whipped around. “Wait-are you black nailing me?”
The High Priest shook his golden hair. His lion ars flicked out and twitched slightly.
“Yup. Picked it up from you. I heard you threatening Snowball earlier. Pretty clever.”
Annelise rubbed her temples.
He was over two hundred years old and still acted like a ten-year-old. Of all the habits to learn. he chose the worst.
He leaned in. “Sweetheart, look at it this way. I’m the one who hid Bunny. I covered his scent. That was all me. So if this is a trade, you’ve got to do your part. And hey, I never forced you to call me ‘Dad.”
Annelise thought, Fine. Technically, he hasn’t take it that far.
Still, she felt like she’d just been played.
“Oh, so now I’m supposed to thank you?”
“Exactly.”
“I—”
Was this guy seriously immune to sarcasm?
She waved him off. Whatever. Not worth it.
By the next morning, everything was calm again in the courtyard.
Snowball was gone, but Annelise had Rokky doing rounds to keep the pressure on the chief.
Now that Snowball was weak, the chief probably wouldn’t go after him again.
Hudson held his precious egg like it were a million-dollar treasure. He beamed the whole morning.
“Grow up fast, baby. Daddy’s waiting for you to rack that shell.”
He planted loud kisses all over it.
Annelise laughed. “If you kiss it any harder, youre gonna split it open.”
“What-what?!”
Hudson jumped like he’d been shocked. His ears shot up, and he stared at the egg like it was

about to break.
Annelise found his reaction hilarious. Teasing him was way too easy.
But she didn’t get to enjoy it long. She got dragged to the backyard for combat training.
Her first challenge? Catch chickens as fast as possible. And she had to do it without stepping
on any eggs.
After a full morning of training, she was drenched in sweat. She wiped her face and glared at the High Priest. “Can I go find bunny now? You romised. Where is he?”
“Yeah. Starting tomorrow, it’s daily training. Bunny’s in the small cave under my old place. Evan went to visit his mom. Brought some veggies too. That cool?”
“It’s fine. He’s visiting family. Of course he should bring something.”
She splashed some water on her face and rushed off to find Adrian.
Along the way, she tried to come up with an apology.
Like…
“Bunny, I’m sorry. I mean, you’re usually the one stirring up drama, so I just assumed. Didn’t think you’d get framed for once.”
No. He’d definitely refuse to come back after hearing that.
