Chapter 11 The Rainy Night
That night, the sky suddenly opened, unleashing a torrential downpour.
The temperature plummeted.
Mid–autumn was swiftly sliding toward late autumn.

Annelise knew Evan was injured. He had just started eating again, and the original host had punished the mates by plucking their fur, leaving Evan with large patches missing.
With the cold rain and his broken leg, he must have been miserable. So she took the only fur she had to keep him warm.
When Annelise appeared in the room, Evan shivered instinctively, his body twitching.
But she didn’t linger.
“Little fox,” she said, “you’re sleeping with me tonight.”
“Ah… huh?”
Hudson froze. Sleeping together–did that mean mating? His eyes went wide.
As for Adrian, he was covered in thick feathers and wasn’t worried about the cold at all. Annelise told him that if he felt chilly, he could just snuggle up to Evan.
Outside, the rain drummed loudly, and each exhale came out as a thin white mist.
When Hudson entered Annelise’s room, she called him three times. “Little fox, little fox… little
fox!”
Hudson’s whole body trembled. His fox ears and tail shot up–bright red, warm, and proud.
“I’m holding you tonight,” Annelise said, “so don’t tuck your ears or tail away. You need to keep me warm. I already gave all the fur I had to Evan.”
Hudson nodded.
“Thank you, Ms. Crawford, for taking care of Evan,” he said.
“You’re welcome? You’re not the one getting it, silly.”
One of Hudson’s ears flopped over as he grinned sheepishly.

When Annelise climbed into bed, Hudson still clutched the edge of his clothes, standing by the side.
“Come on, don’t just stand there,” Annelise said, patting the bed.
“Mm… okay!”
As Hudson got in, his big, fluffy red tail immediately slid into her arms.
“So warm,” Annelise murmured, resting her cheek against it.
Hudson waited, heart racing, hoping she would suggest mating. His face burned bright red. He pressed his legs together tightly to avoid an awkward bulge under his pants.
But after a long while, all he heard was a soft snore.
“Ms. Crawford, you… you just fell asleep?” he asked.
Of course, there was no answer.
Annelise slept peacefully beside the warm, furry body, just like she used to when she cuddled her Samoyed, Snowball, back in her old world.
Poor Hudson, though, had to stay frozen, legs clenched tight. He didn’t dare move or get out of bed. Without the matriarch’s command, he couldn’t do anything. If he leaned in, he might get hit. It hadn’t been long since the matriarch recovered.
So he endured the entire night, waiting until dawn. Only when he said, “Ms. Crawford, you stay in bed a little longer–I’ll make breakfast,” did he finally leave her room, practically sprinting to the backyard with his legs still pressed tightly together.
Adrian, being a rabbit, was active at sunrise. Seeing Hudson rush out, he followed and asked eagerly, “Did you two mate last night? I was listening, but I didn’t hear anything, and eventually I fell asleep.”
“You’re not the matriarch’s mate. Why are you asking?”
“Curiosity. Back in my tribe, mating was noisy. Also… what does it even feel like?”
“I don’t know! Right now it hurts–get away, I’m in pain!”
“Huh?” Adrian froze, utterly confused.
Hudson, meanwhile, really was in agony.

But just then, a crowd swarmed outside–mates and females alike. Their knocking and shouting woke Annelise from her slumber.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
The chaos outside only grew.
“Bring out your matriarch!”
Rubbing her eyes and stifling a yawn, Annelise stepped outside.
There, she saw a well–dressed female with a high ponytail wrapped with a hemp cord, two feathers tucked in, and bizarrely shaped stones strung around her neck.
This was Clara Winslow, the daughter of the tribe’s chief.
Behind her were many robust mates, some with honey–colored skin and broad chests, others pale–skinned with slim waists. She clearly had some good–looking companions.
Clara spoke. “Our tribe is in crisis. My mother says a sacrifice is needed to appease it–poultry mates from each family. Annelise, although your peacock’s leg is broken from your beating, making him less than ideal, he’ll do. Hand him over.”
“What?” Annelise tugged at her ear in disbelief.
Looking closer, she saw Clara holding a thick rope, the other end tied to several male poultry mates–mates taken from other households. No wonder their faces were resigned yet sorrowful.
Evan hobbled forward.
Annelise stepped in front of him, hand raised. “I don’t agree!”
Evan gasped, leaning close to her ear. “Even if you want to show determination, now is not the time. In a tribe, the chief’s orders are absolute.”
