Riven grew so furious that his eyes practically sparked. “I told the chief to bond with me. Sne refused-kept dragging it out. The moment I stepped out of her house, I felt off. I don’t know what happened.”
Annelise grew alert at once. She first used a needle to vent some of Riven’s heat, then asked, “Can you stand?”
Riven tested his legs; they were steadier than before. He nodded. “Yeah.”
“We need to get somewhere hidden. Let’s go to the cave the High Priest used to live in.”
It sat below the cliff on the downwind side. Even in strong winds, Riven’s scent wouldn’t drift up to the tribe.
Riven stood, and Annelise instinctively wanted to reach for him but held back. She only asked, “Do you need me to help you walk?”
“No!”
“Ugh, still the same rotten temper. I saved your hide-you could at least say thanks.”
Everyone knew that if this scent spread and more females caught it, Riven could kiss the tribe goodbye. Forget any scandal-getting kicked out before he completed Annelise’s plan would ruin everything.
She expected him to argue, to snap back as usual, never admitting defeat. But instead, Riven stayed silent for a long moment. They walked some distance before he finally rasped, “Thanks…”
Huh?! His voice… It’s kinda sexy…
Annelise stared openly at him. His entire face was flushed red. Sweat soaked his clothes until they clung to his skin, outlining the lines of his back and the sharp curve of his waist. It looked like he was walking a runway.
That’s
way too perfect. What kind of training gives someone a back and waist like that?
Unable to resist, she muttered, “What was that? I didn’t hear you-say it louder?”
“Uh!”
He couldn’t believe that after he finally managed a thank you, she wanted him to repeat it!
“T-Thank you.”

This time, Riven gritted his teeth around the words, and Annelise couldn’t help teasing, “Still can’t hear you. Want to try again? Who are you thanking and for what?”
Riven glared at her with those big, round eyes, so angry he looked like he wanted to crush her between them.
She’s doing it on purpose. Definitely on purpose.
“Die! I’ll roast you!”
“Yeah, yeah, ungrateful brat. Move!”
By the time they finally reached the cave at the bottom of the cliff, Riven’s body temperature had burned even higher, and the sweet scent around him was almost syrup-thick-like he’d turned into a walking jar of heated sugar. But at least they were safe.
The air current carried everything downward into the uninhabited area. The moment Riven stepped inside, he lost all strength, dropping to one knee as his breathing broke free and he stopped trying to restrain himself.
“How long does your heat cycle last?” Annelise asked.
“About three days.”
“When you visited the chief’s house, did you touch anything strange? Drink, sniff, lick— anything?”
Riven glared. “Lick? Am I a dog?!”
“It’s a figure of speech! I’m not suggesting you actually licked anything.”
Riven held his chest, sweat streaming down his face. His eyes were foggy, the lashes wet, and when he blinked, Annelise’s heart skipped.
He really thought about it, then muttered, “I went in… but the chief’s mates didn’t. No-more like they only went in after I left. I didn’t drink anything. But something was burning inside… smelled like herbs…”
Hmm?! Annelise perked up. Burning herbs?
She lunged forward, face close. “What was she burning?!”
“Ah!” Riven jerked back when he suddenly found her face enlarged in front of him. He fell straight to the ground in fright. Then, realizing he was a 33-year-old fully grown male who had just been startled by a young female, he scrambled back up and roared, “What are you doing, getting so close?!”
