Chapter 124 What Exactly Did Riven Think Happened?
And no matriarch would want a looked-down-on shifter. But… I don’t like her!
Riven looked Annelise over again. She tilted her head at him, puzzled.

She’s actually… quite pretty. And she did save me-not as useless as she appears to be. Other than loving to smooch and cuddle with her mates, she’s pretty decent-so far. But she’s still young.
Eventually, Annelise brought Riven’s clothes over. He reached out to take them, but then panicked. “Put them on the ground!”
“Hey! You’re behaving as if I bullied you. And shifters aren’t that uptight, are they?”
Dude, you’re even more uptight than I am! Annelise grumbled. I only stripped you because you were overheating. I didn’t even do anything!
“Isn’t it a male thing stripping yourselves randomly and running around wild?”
“That’s a f*cking barbarian! My tribe isn’t as crude as your backward tribe! What are clothes for? To cover what needs covering! Top half? Sure. But bottom half? Absolutely not!”
Annelise’s eyes lit up like she’d discovered a new continent. High Priest, look, we’ve found an advanced thinker! No-look at this brimel with traditional male modesty!
That also told her something important. Even though all shifters had evolved from wild tribes into semi-civilized communities, each tribe progressed at different speeds.
Riven’s tribe, made up entirely of brimels, was powerful and sat at the top of the food chain. They didn’t worry about food or the environment. Their own fire and body heat killed off most bacteria and viruses, so once survival was secure, all that was left was indulgence and mischief. Naturally, they took great pride in their lower-body clothing.
Annelise blinked. “Speaking of which-brimels only have one leg and usually signal that a fire is coming. How come you have two legs when you shift?”
“What, you expect me to still fly everywhere in human form? I could, but as a shifter, I’m on land more than in the sky. Of course, I need two legs. You wouldn’t expect a mere folk to flop around on land with one tail, would you?”
Annelise snapped her fingers. “Touche! Anyway, but your clothes on. Your heat went down, so let’s head back. The chief must be dying of curiosity about how you’re perfectly fine, and we need to figure out how to get you out of the tribe.”
Riven slipped on his top and then, with a quick motion, put on his pants. But the more he did, the more suspicious he became that he had copulated with Annelise.

A brimel’s heat cycle lasted exactly three days-ever more, never less. Yet after only one day. it was gone. Other than mating, he couldn’t think of anything else that could cool him down.
Once he convinced himself of this, Riven made a difficult decision. He would court her slowly. And then, naturally, get her to bond with him. Otherwise, he’d be that disgraceful male who fooled around before bonding.
No one would want him!
“Ahem.” Riven cleared his throat. “Annelise… your house is a bit small. I know, we should wait until we settle the situation with the chief; only then should your mates build more rooms. Thinking about building while we’re still dealing with danger is being scatterbrained. It’s not acceptable. I also noticed your males don’t have many clothing styles.”
“Huh?” Annelise blinked. “What, you think the clothes you’re wearing don’t look good?”
She rubbed her chin, thinking. Riven’s usual outfit is bright, flaming red. Maybe males like wearing colors that match their fur?
“Once this situation blows over, I should really rotate their clothes more. Hudson looks best in bright red. Evan, of course, needs deep green with a hint of blue stone accents. Adrian? Obviously soft pink and white. And Rokky needs a bright yellow set.”
