If they actually end up having a cub, I’ll be stuck in third place for good. No. I might get pushed down to fourth, maybe even fifth.

So, Adrian lowered his voice and said, “Ms. Crawford, everything below my neck hurts. My whole collarbone is aching. Did I break it? I am scared. Could you take a look at it tonight?”

“Hmm? Sure. I will check it right now,” Annelise aid.

Breaking a collarbone, seriously? If his collarbone were actually broken, it would hurt like hell. He would not even be able to lift his neck. There is no way he would still have the leisure to tilt his head back and chat so calmly.

“Ah… now? You want to look now? Wouldn’t it be better to check later tonight in the bedroom? Ah, hey, that hurts!”

Annelise slapped her hand down on Adrian’s collarbone, pressing hard enough to make him yelp and squawk. Then she said, “Your collarbone is completely fine. Stop acting up. Tonight is Evan’s night. Evan’s.”

“By that logic, last night should’ve been Evan’s,” Adrian shot back.

“I wasn’t back last night. I was treating Riven.”

“Then, you missed it. That’s it.”

Annelise leaned in and bit down on Adrian’s big rabbit ear, hard enough to draw a whimper out of him. Only then did she let go. “If I missed it, it gets postponed. I don’t do ‘missed is missed forever.’ And you, stand properly and stop acting cute.”

When Adrian acted cute, he really was cute. His oft, plush body pressed against her, warm and comfortable. Even so, she did not cave.

He huffed and straightened up. “I nearly got strangled to death by him. Aren’t you going to show me a little more sympathy?”

“Last time, you made him so angry that he threw up blood,” Annelise countered.

Let’s just say the universe keeps its own score, and no one really gets away with anything.

I have heard how it all started. Riven tells my mates about the chief and even mentions that his true form is avian. I have no idea why Riven suddenly spills everything. He never talked like this before. Most of the time, it is just ‘why do you care’ or ‘why are you asking so many questions’ coming out of his mouth.

Annelise did not know that Riven had wanted to bond with her. That was why he had spoken so freely, holding nothing back.

After a few sips of water, the usually composed Rokky finally spoke. “Ms. Crawford, I remembered something. I… Seventeen or eighteen years ago, I was the chief’s mate. No, that’s not quite right. We never bonded, but we almos, did.”

Annelise walked over and saw that he was still crouched there, so she lowered herself as well. She gently ran her hand through his long hair.

Rokky always wore his hair loose. After Evan and Rokky had grown closer, Evan once tried to tie it up, saying it would be more convenient.

Rokky had resisted fiercely.

Now, with Annelise’s touch, he lifted his hair on his own.

Annelise laughed softly. “Rokky, it is okay. Say whatever comes to mind. You are safe here. I am here with you, and you will never turn back into what you were before. All it takes is my voice to stop you. You saw it just now. I did it.”

“Y-Yes. Ms. Crawford, sweetie. You did,” Rokky said.

He began talking about growing up in the tribe. His childhood had been short. Before long, he had to hunt for himself. He was an outsider cub with no family, and because of that, the chief often sought him out in secret. She told him she liked him. She wanted to bond with him so they could work together to protect the tribe.

“For a while, I lived in an empty room at the chief’s house. Her existing mate trained me. He taught me how to care for cubs and how to serve the chief properly. Washing her face with cold water, and handing her shoes when she got out of bed. Those were all rituals for serving the chief.”

Annelise let out a long, drawn-out sound. “Oh, that explains it. Now it makes sense. I always thought you went to another tribe to learn those things. But thinking about it now, the chief had the highest treatment, so of course. And the reason you call me sweetie is that you helped raise cubs for the chief, right?”

Rokky nodded. “Yes. I took care of some male cubs. Feeding them and things like that.”

“Did you take care of Clara, too?”

“I did…” he continued, “But one day, out of nowhere, the chief’s mate told me I had defiled the tribe’s god. He said that meant I could never be bonded. In the end, they drove me out. I was terrified. In a tribe, whatever the chief says is absolute.
