Hudson laughed after hearing her. He leaned in close to Annelise’s ear and whispered, “So this is our first time, just ours, right?”
Annelise nodded. “Yeah.”
Hudson’s tail fanned out completely behind him, swishing nonstop. One of them kept brushing against the back of Annelise’s head.
She felt it had gotten bigger, fluffier somehow. It seemed like she could just curl up inside it entirely and be fine. Still, she warned, “Have fun, but don’t forget our eggs. Not a single one got left unrolled, right? Don’t let them drop.”
“Never! They’re all tucked in tight!”
Riven, watching the whole scene, felt increasingly that this family was full of warmth and
care.
He had thought Annelise was some violent, aggressive female. He assumed her mates would be desperate like Adrian, groveling for attention. But after getting to know them, he realized none of that was true.
Riven found himself thinking he really wanted to be part of this family.
After spending the whole afternoon napping, someone who hadn’t shown up in a long time knocked at their door. “Annelise! Annelise! Come out quickly! Shaman’s up at the mountain, at the snake pool, asking the sky, and the reading came back-you’re the bad omen.”
It was Holly.
Riven had already gone out. He wasn’t around the house. Hudson was the one who opened the door for Holly.
Annelise woke up fully rested. She yawned and stretched, then felt her face being gently wiped with a warm, damp cloth.
Rokky had gone out of his way to take care of her. After cleaning her face, he lowered his head, clearly shy, and pressed a soft kiss to her cheek.
Annelise was genuinely surprised. He had actually taken the initiative.
She had not even had time to ask about it when Holly pushed the door open.

“Ugh, I heard already. They just declared me a bad omen, right?” She was not shocked at all. If the chief had done nothing, that would have been unusual. Ordering the shamans to smear her reputation was precisely what she had expected.
Holly was furious. “Do you even know what being labeled a bad omen means? You will be driven out of the tribe!” As she spoke, she grabbed Annelise’s hand and started pulling her along. “Come with me. We are going up to the forest on the mountain.”
But the moment they left, the High Priest returned, looking confused. “I just came down from the mountain. There were no shamans up there.”
Evan froze for a second, then followed them outside immediately. “Mr. Allen, let’s go find Snowball.” he said.
The High Priest paused. The gentleness in his eyes vanished, replaced by something sharp and alert. “Something is wrong. They should be targeting Riven. If they are not targeting Riven, then we have to activate Sweetheart’s other plan.”
He turned to Rokky. “Come. After we find Snowball, you are coming with me to see Clara.”
Rokky looked utterly baffled. “Wait. Why are we going to see Clara?”
Rokky understood what was going on. Holly had lied and tricked Annelise into leaving. In his mind, they should have gone to rescue Annelise immediately.
The High Priest shook his head lightly. “That was my first thought, too. I suggested it back then. But my sweetheart did not agree. She called it something else. Some kind of backup scheme. Or a layered option. Something like that.”
What Annelise had actually said was Plan B. The High Priest had not understood it at all and even added, “Riven’s ven?” He misheard it as a pun.
She swore internally. Back then, Annelise had honestly thought that trying to explain Eastran to a wild shifter meant she was the one entirely out of her mind. Then, she said it was a layered option.

Seeing how firm the High Priest was, Rokky had no choice but to follow him.
Adrian also wanted to go along.

The High Priest snapped, “You and Hudson stay home. One of you is a herbivore shifter, and the other has an egg to incubate. Neither of you should be going out.”
As for Annelise, when Holly led her up the mountain, she tilted her head and glanced upward. No snakes were hanging at the entrance That felt normal to her. It was winter, after all. Snakes should be hibernating.
But as they walked closer to the snake pool, something started to feel off. The other party was a shaman, someone highly respected within the tribe. Annelise could not help wondering how a shaman could travel with so few people. Even if no one was guarding the entrance, there should have been lines of guards stationed among the trees on the mountain.
“Holly, are you sure this is the place?”
“Of course. I heard the chiefs talking about it myself.”
“You were eavesdropping?”
Holly nodded. She even patted her chest and said, “You should feel lucky to have a friend like me. When I came out in the evening, I saw the chiefs talking from a distance, so I listened in. The moment I heard it, I rushed to find you.”
She also explained that after spending time together, and after everything that had happened in the tribe before with the avian and shifter sacrifices, she genuinely felt that Annelise was a good person.
Annelise could not help asking, “Then what do you think of the chief?”
“The chief… I do not really know how to put it. All these years, she has always put the tribe first. She leads her mates to protect everyone here. She patrols every night, and when savage beasts launch surprise attacks, she takes her mates to hunt them down. I think she is… fine. Pretty good, I guess. But she and I are not the kind of close that could be friends. It is like how it is with Clara. We cannot really be friends either.”
“So just average, then,” Annelise summed up. She could not help asking again, “Holly, what is your true beast form? You are not twenty-five ye, but you are getting close, right?”
