Chapter 139 A Fire That Wouldn’t Burn

When Riven heard that, anger surged across his face.

Flames flared in his palm..

Annelise yelped and hurried back a step. The three mates moved instantly, closing ranks around her in a protective wall.

“Hey, talk it out,” one of them snapped. “No need to get violent.”

“Yeah,” another added darkly. “You two mated, and I felt miserable enough already, but I never thought about killing the matriarch. And you want to burn her alive?”

Riven was utterly convinced of one thing-he had mated with Annelise.

That little female who turned around and denied everything-rotten to the core!

“Little female, didn’t I tell you before? I don’t accept bonding first and breaking it later. And now I’m telling you this-I don’t accept mating frst and not bonding either!”

“B-But I really didn’t do anything!” Annelise stammered. “You kept shouting that you were hot. You’d already stripped yourself half naked, so I just helped you take the rest off. The reason your three-day heat ended in one day was that I treated you. I used acupuncture to drain the excess heat.”

A vein bulged at Riven’s temple. “And you expect me to believe that?”

“Why wouldn’t you believe it?”

“Because you slept on my clothes. You were lying on top of my clothes!”

The moment he said that, all the mates turned to look at Annelise.

She raised both hands at once. “I swear I didn’t do anything strange with him! I didn’t even hold his hand. I lay on his clothes because I was afraid of getting cold and catching a chill!”

Riven was right on the edge of exploding. “Fine. You won’t admit it? You’ve got some nerve. Let me tell you this-your beast soul might scare others, but it doesn’t scare me. You can die!”

He loved threatening to kill someone. At the same time, the fire in his hand surged toward Annelise’s face.

Annelise screamed. Every mate-and Snowball too-cried out in shock.

“Ms. Crawford!”

The flames never touched her. Somehow, no matter how Riven tried, his fire simply wouldn’t ignite on Annelise.

That didn’t stop him from planting a solid lump on her head.

By the time they got home, Annelise was furious-and deeply wronged.

What made it worse was that Riven followed her back.

His reason was simple-bonding.

Annelise refused outright. Sure, Riven was ridiculously handsome, but she wasn’t interested. “How are you going to prove that I mated with you?” she demanded.

“Prove it?” Riven scoffed. “I was naked, in heat, spent the whole night alone with you, and my heat subsided. What more proof do you need?”

For the first time since coming to this world, she felt an overwhelming urge to curse

someone out.

Late at night, Annelise should have been exhausted. She hadn’t slept for a full day and night, but she wasn’t tired at all.

She sat on a stool in her room, glaring at the oil lamp, stewing in anger.

Two mates were with her-Rokky and Evan.

Evan sat across from her, resting his chin on one hand, his eyes curved gently as he watched

her.

Rokky carefully pressed a chilled cloth-fresh from ice-against the swelling on her head, cooling it bit by bit. Every so often, he leaned down and blew softly.

“Ms. Crawford, sweetie, does it feel a little better when I blow on it?”

“Mm…” Annelise replied. Inside, she felt miserable.

“He wants five chickens, and he says I have to bond with him,” she muttered. “That brimel really knows how to get the best deal.”

Evan only smiled faintly and said nothing.

She went on, “I need to figure out a way to keep him from showing up at my house. Can you believe he just went and slept in the third room? That used to be the High Priest’s room. He really makes himself at home.”

“And if he wanted more chickens, he could’ve talked to me,” she continued, irritation spilling out, “Instead, he used becoming my mate as a threat. Who does that-raising the stakes without even discussing it?”

After venting for a long while, she finally felt a little calmer.

Then she remembered how that man had openly told every shifter in the tribe that he was going to be her mate.

She wanted to strangle him.

One or two people were manageable. But now? How was she supposed to explain this?

“Oh, come on,” she said, waving her hands. “I know I’m great. Really great. Extremely great. But I’m not so great that someone would want to be with me instantly. The females he met before must’ve been awful, so when he met me, he tried to get my attention by acting violent. That has to be it!”

She even thought of elementary school boys-the kind who pulled girls’ hair.

When they were asked to apologize, they did.

Then, they pulled it again the next day.
