Of course, Annelise was lying.

The shaman had caused countless deaths in the tribe. Worse still, she had misled the Chief into hurting Rokky, harmed Snowball’s original host, and even targeted Riven.

Someone like that deserved to die.

The shaman sneered. “Do you think I’m an idiot Annelise, just wait. You’re going to pay for this.”

Annelise clicked her tongue. She grabbed the shaman by the face, forcing her head back, and dumped all the powder she had developed straight into the woman’s nostrils.

Watching the shaman writhe in agony, Annelise smiled. “Are you going to talk or not? If you won’t speak, I’ll cut out your tongue and make you write instead.”

She had to admit it—being the villain felt incredible.

Against someone who was purely evil, she felt no guilt at all,

For once, she got to be swift and ruthless.

The shaman flailed, pushing at her desperately. Finally, Annelise lost her patience. She pulled a dagger from her chest and stabbed it straight into the shaman’s snake tail.

“Speak. What is my beast form?”

The shaman clenched her teeth. The searing pain in her tail made her whole body tremble. With great effort, she forced out a breath. “I-I’ll tell—”

But in the very next instant, the shaman shoved Annelise away, seized the dagger, and sliced off her own snake tail. She twisted around and leaped off the cliff.

That kind of resolve caught Annelise completely off guard, especially when she looked down. at the severed tail on the ground-long and thick, nearly cut from the midpoint.

After falling from this height, could the shaman even survive?

And if she did survive, once she reverted to human form, she would probably have no legs at all-nothing below the waist.

That thought made Annelise uneasy. “Riven, take me down,” she said. “All the way to the bottom of the cliff.”

Riven wrapped his arms around her again and jumped.

As they fell, his cheek brushed against the top of her head. “Ms. Crawford, you need me. When we get back, form a bond with me.”

“What?”

“I can feel your heart racing,” he said calmly. “When we’re back, bite my neck.”

“No-listen, we’re falling at high speed. Of course my heart is racing. If I rode a roller coaster and felt nothing, I’d be no different from a corpse.”

Riven ignored her protest. He pulled her closer and kissed her cheek.

Annelise felt it clearly-his lips were warm.

He was a brimel, a shifter born of fire.

Even his mouth was hotter than other males’

Her face flushed instantly.

Hey-what was that for? And in midair, no less.

Something stirred uneasily in her chest.

This felt different from kissing Evan, different from kissing the little fox, or even the rabbit.

Among her four mates, there were ones she had chosen first, ones she pitied at first sight and grew to like, and ones who clung to her softly and eagerly.

But Riven was different.

He came off as domineering, short-tempered, yet always willing to give-and even when she refused, he gave anyway.

His kind of presence crept up on her. She barely noticed it at first, but once she did, she couldn’t shake it off.

“Ms. Crawford,” he asked, “why is your face red? Is it because I’m next to you and it’s too hot?”

“Uh… no. I mean-yes!”

If she said no, he would ask for another reason, and she wouldn’t know how to answer.

And then Riven would really think she liked him.

When they reached the bottom of the cliff, Annelise immediately caught the smell of scorched grass.

“This scent… is it what you mentioned before? The heat-inducing herbs?”

The answer was obvious.

The cliff bottom had clearly been prepared in advance. Burnt piles of grass lay scattered everywhere.

If the shaman hadn’t done this, no shifter in this world would have thought of it.

She had even planned this step.

She wasn’t stupid.

Riven nodded. “Yes. It’s the heat-inducing herbs. No doubt about it.”

Annelise hurriedly covered Riven’s nose and mouth. “Don’t breathe it in. Hold your breath. We need to get to the downwind side.”

Then, another thought struck her.

If Riven went into heat here while fully conscious, wouldn’t that prove that she had never mated with him?

Perfect.

Annelise immediately let go.

“You… breathe it in,” she said. “Go into heat, quickly. If the shaman planned this far ahead, she must have anticipated cutting off her tail to escape. She’s probably already out of reach.”

So Annelise decided that if things had to be dealt with, she might as well deal with Riven too.
