“So, I’ll take you back the way I brought you out I promise-every bit of you, just as you are, not a scratch missing.”
Annelise thought to herself, Well, at least he keeps his word.
Yeah, he’d always been like that. From the very start, when she asked him to lure the chief into the trap, he didn’t hesitate. He did it without a fuss, and with a strong sense of justice too.
And he didn’t even do a bad job of it.
If things hadn’t gone sideways halfway through they’d probably be long gone by now-five chickens in hand and out of here.
Annelise sighed as she stepped into a wide, spacious building.
This used to be the chief’s house, but since Mr. Allen wasn’t staying in the bedroom anymore, he’d moved to another space.
He didn’t have a mate, after all. No need for so much room. Any spot would do for work.
Thanks to all his new arrangements, there were now patrols scheduled around the tribe to ward off wild beasts. Others handled daily rituals and blessings, filling in as temporary
shamans.
Everything ran like clockwork.
The moment Mr. Allen saw Annelise, he rushed over for a hug.
“Sweetheart! Did you miss your old man?”
Annelise ducked and slipped right under his arms.
“Hey, be serious. Quit messing around.”
“I’m not messing around! You used to live with me, remember? I got to see my sweet little girl every day. Now I barely catch a glimpse-don’t tell me you haven’t missed me too? Come on, you’re only twenty-four. You’re still allowed to act a little spoiled.”
Annelise shot him a glare.
“Let’s stay on topic. I didn’t catch Shaman.”
She told him about how Shaman had cut off her own tail and seemed ready for everything, even hiding out at the bottom of a cliff. The woman wasn’t simple-she’d clearly had an

The worst part? She knew what Annelise’s true form was and said nothing. That alone spelled trouble.
Mr. Allen, wise as he was, was still just a lion shifter. Before Riven had revealed his identity. even he couldn’t guess what Riven was-much less figure out Annelise’s beast soul just by looking.
He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “You think maybe you’re some kind of divine beast? What if word gets out and all the tribes come attacking trying to snatch you up?”
Annelise didn’t buy it. “Me? With this sorry excuse of a beast soul? Divine beast? Yeah, right.”
Still, whatever the case, Shaman clearly wasn’t going to back off easily.
“We better double the patrols,” she said. “Have them rotate shifts. Day and night, nonstop.”
Mr. Allen hesitated. “That’s not gonna be easy. Without a solid reason, I can only convince a small number of shifters. Most of them won’t budge. But I’ll try. Right now, the priority is treating the wounded-lots of them got bitten by venomous snakes.”
Then, he gave her a knowing smile. “You’ve got antidotes and yet you keep trading them for beast hides and chickens. So many-are you even going to use them all?
“And don’t you already have plenty of chickens, ducks, and beast-hide cloaks?
“You might want to scale it back a bit. Some families are barely scraping by-if they give up their only hide to trade with you, they’ll have nothing left to wear.”
Annelise frowned. “It’s not like I got these antidotes for free. I worked for them. Why should I just hand them out for nothing? Mr. Allen, I know you’ve been grooming me to become the
next chief, but I’m not. I never will be.”
Mr. Allen chuckled. “You’re overthinking things I don’t have that in mind. If I did, why would I be standing in as chief right now?
“I’m just saying… maybe lower your price a little Like, ask for half a basket of wild greens from each family. Fair enough?
“L”
Annelise glanced behind him-and sure enough, baskets of wild greens had piled up. So that’s
