Annelise didn’t respond, but deep down, she knew that Riven was absolutely the type to mean every word of that vow.

And that was exactly the problem.

She didn’t want to accept it. She didn’t want to feel trapped, to feel controlled or forced into anything. But at the same time, she didn’t want to start a fight with Riven, especially not first thing in the morning.

And yes, it really was morning.

After all that chaos, the sky had started to brighten.

She was exhausted. Physically, emotionally-just drained.

“I’m going to sleep,” she said flatly. “Whatever needs discussing, we’ll talk after I’ve rested.”

She walked away without waiting for a reply.

No one dared say a word. They could all tell-Annelise was seriously upset.

Adrian pouted while Riven stood rooted in place.

He had gotten what he’d hoped for, but it didn’t feel like a victory. Not at all.

He realized something important: when Annelise wasn’t smiling, he felt miserable.

He loved seeing her laugh, loved her boldness, her sharp tongue, her fire. Now, with her quiet and closed off, he didn’t even know how to look at her.

Annelise took a few steps, then turned back suddenly. “Evan? Why aren’t you coming? Come on, you didn’t sleep last night. Come sleep with me now.”

Evan blinked. “Oh. Yes.”

He stood frozen for a second.

Truth be told, he was battling his own mess of emotions.

Unlike Hudson or Rokky, he hadn’t been able to do anything earlier-hadn’t helped stop Adrian, hadn’t shielded anyone from danger.

He’d been completely powerless.

Now, Annelise’s only remaining ornamental shifter was him. Even Adrian didn’t count as “ornamental” any more.

So that left Evan, the useless, beautiful Evan.

He followed her back to the only room still intact.

Annelise exhaled deeply and shut the door behind them.

“Evan,” she said. “go lie on the bed and take off your shirt. I need to see your back. Those wooden planks and stones hit you square on, didn’t they?”

Evan didn’t move. He stood by the window, tall and slimm, shoulders straight, his belt wrapped twice around his narrow waist.

But his hands-tucked at his sides were ballet tightly into fists.

After a long pause, he finally spoke, I’m fine, Ms. Crawford. You should rest. You’re carrying a cub now, and you already drained some spirit energy bonding with Riven. These next ten days are for you to rest, not worry about me.”

“Excuse me?” Annelise raised an eyebrow. “Why are you being so formal?”

He’d often spoken politely around others, and the let it slide then. But now, when it was just the two of them?

Evan immediately shook his head. “No, sorry. There’s just…. been so much tonight. My brain hasn’t caught up. Ms. Cr-I mean, you should lie down. I’ll just sit by your bed.”

But even as he said that, he couldn’t shake the feeling of being useless.

He was just an ornamental shifter. What could that possibly accomplish to sit by her bedside?

Could he even protect her when it mattered?

Still lost in thought, he didn’t notice Annelise step forward and start pulling his shirt off

“You’re definitely hurt.”

“I’m not-”

“Don’t move.”

Her tone was firmer now. A gentle command, but unmistakably a command.

“If you don’t want me to waste more spirit energy ordering you, then don’t move.”

Annelise hated doing that. The original Annelise used to speak to him in commands all the time, and she didn’t want to bring back those dark memories.

But the moment she pulled his shirt off she saw it-his back was covered in bruises. Deep purples and angry reds.

Her mood plummeted instantly.

“See?! I knew it! I watched those planks and rocks fall on you! You’re not made of steel!”

She went to grab some herbs to reduce the bruising Fortunately, nothing internal was damaged. Shifter bodies were tougher than the average human’s, and it showed.

Evan took the medicine, and when Annelise went to apply the salve to his back, he tried to take it from her. “Ms. Crawford, really, you should rest. I can handle it.”

“Can you reach your back?”

“I… I’ll manage.”

“Yeah, right.” She scoffed. “And anyway, listen. This whole Riven thing? It’s messing with my head. I’m just… I feel awful about it. I didn’t want to bond with him. Nothing even happened between us. We don’t have that kind of connection.
