In the backyard back then, she had told him to back off, and he did. Now she told him not to run, and he stayed put.
Was she special to him?
She cleared her throat. “Snap out of it. Wake up.”
As expected, the man’s body jolted. His soft almond–shaped eyes cleared, the haze fading as his focus returned.
He shook his head hard, confused, staring at her. “You…”
“Has this ever happened before?” she asked.
“N–No!”
He explained that he was conscious so rarely that every time he woke, months–sometimes a whole year–had gone by.
The place he found himself in would be different, too.
But waking this fast? That had never happened.
Annelise remembered the bond between a female and a male shifter.
Most males, once they hit twenty–five, needed a female to bond with them–her spirit energy keeping their minds steady so they wouldn’t die young or fall into madness.
So, was she his destined mate? His destined matriarch?
She rubbed her hands together and actually giggled.
“Heh… Hey, buddy, maybe I can bond with you and calm that rage of yours.”
He immediately shook his head.
“No… that’s impossible. And even if it weren’t, don’t do it. You should tell the chief and have her burn me alive–that’s the best choice.”
Annelise’s mouth twisted. “You’re so eager to die. Why? You were looking for ways to survive

He lowered his head fast, let out a bitter laugh, and said, “I’m not like other male shifters. I’m… broken. I’ve been to many tribes. All I know is that my race is called ‘tharok. The rest… why I can live this long without a bond or why no female can bond with me, I have no idea. And even if you could suppress my rage, I’d be too embarrassed to stay in this tribe.”
He said he was much older than her, and that in the past dozen years, he had attacked countless males and females alike.
He had already lost any rightful place to live.
The chief wouldn’t accept him. The tribe wouldn’t accept him.
All he wanted now was death. And he was already content.
“This is the first time… since turning twenty–five… that I’ve been able to speak so clearly. Before this, it was impossible. And it’s all thanks to you.”
Annelise let out a long sigh.
“When you care too much about what people think, you just end up miserable. Buddy, I think you can live–and live well. Live your own life. Let people say what they want.
“Shut the door, and whatever they say won’t reach you. And my place is up on the slope anyway–no neighbors, nothing but peace and quiet.”
“I…”
Annelise had already walked behind him.
She eyed his pale neck.
One bite–one push of spirit energy–and the bond would be sealed.
She lunged. His whole body trembled, and he even tried to pull away.
Annelise huffed. “Hold that position. Don’t move.”
He froze, and his voice trembled with refusal.
“You’ll regret this. You’re so young… I don’t deserve you. I’m the monster they say I am. And if I lose control again, I’ll tear your mates apart… Ah!“.
He yelped. Annelise had already sunk her teeth into his neck.

Chapter 16 The Tharok’s Awakening
Compared to Adrian’s reaction, this tharok shifter was something else.

When Adrian was bitten, he only shivered softly, eyes wet, his beast ears and tail popping out.
But this tharok shifter–his five tails were already visible, and now all five slowly lifted, shaking wildly like a blooming flower.
His leopard–like beast ears shot out and twitched nonstop.
“Mmm… Y–You brat, why are you forcing me…”
Forcing you? Annelise scoffed.
This was called saving a beautiful life.
She bit down hard and didn’t let go for a long moment. She kept her teeth there, determined to remind this big beast how precious life could be.
“Mm…”
The tharok shifter suddenly felt heat rush through him–especially his abdomen, as if a fire had ignited inside him.
He whipped around, pinning Annelise beneath him in an instant, reaching for her lips. He wanted to pull at her clothes, to mate.
But then he froze. Terror flooded him again–fear of losing control. He couldn’t.
He clenched his jaw, forcing the heat back. He let the rain drench him, and instead of kissing her, he pressed against her like an oversized cat, rubbing his face into the curve of her neck. He twisted and curled around her, unable to pull himself away.
Annelise’s spirit energy worked through him like spring water, and for the first time in all these years, he felt what it meant to bond with a female–truly bond. And it felt blissful.
“Mmm… From now on, you’re my matriarch…”
“Yep.”
Annelise patted his back, thinking that in “The Boundless Atlas,” a tharok looked like a leopard. And a leopard was just a big cat.
