“If you need anything, just tell me directly, or go to Evan and have him pass the message to me.”
She added that she had another cub now-this time a daughter.
Snowball sneaked a glance at Riven and saw him standing there with his hands clasped behind his back, silent, stiff… utterly neglected. Snowball recognized that look all too well. That was the look of someone who wasn’t loved.
He grunted twice in acknowledgment of the daughter.
Even though Snowball felt jealous on the inside, he didn’t take it too seriously. Evan having a cub was already a done deal. He’d been here from the start; it wasn’t realistic to think he’d be driven away. In fact, none of Annelise’s four mates were going anywhere-they all already knew Snowball’s tricks. The real priority was making sure she didn’t add more.
So Snowball said, “Annelise, I believe you two didn’t copulate now.”
“Huh?!”
“Really. Because with your personality-if you really liked someone, or thought someone belonged to you-you’d definitely treat him with affection. Just like you do with Adrian. You’re either holding him or letting him hold you. You wouldn’t be in this awkward situation that even I’m curling my toes from secondhand embarrassment.”
Annelise nodded vigorously, wanting to say, Snowball, you’re absolutely right. This is exactly how it feels. So awkward that I want to dig a hole and hide in it!
Snowball grinned and looked up at Riven. “What was it you told me before? That I’d only eve be a younger brother? Right. You wanted to say you’d already copulated, huh? Well, I’ve got a line for you too. So what if you copulated? She still doesn’t love you…”
He finished with a smug arch of his brows and even winked at Riven-absolutely pleased with himself.
Oh, that felt good. So good!
Riven’s brow tightened slightly.
Annelise hadn’t expected Snowball to shoot his mouth off like that. But dogs-especially a Samoyed like Snowball-were experts at reading the room and switching sides on a whim.

Riven, surprisingly, didn’t snap back. He simply stopped meeting Snowball’s eyes and gave him a gentle, almost indulgent smile-as if Snowball really were just a child. But Annelise sensed it-Riven was definitely hurting inside. It wasn’t something she consciously analyzed; it was more like a quiet tug in her chest.
Snowball kept going. “Not loved, and then bonded-what’s that if not forcing my sister? Did you pester her nonstop? Or sneak around at night? Hmph! Either way, being bonded is as far as you’ll ever get.”
Annelise hurriedly told Snowball to stop, pushing him toward the east to handle the smallpox outbreak.
Snowball stuck out his tongue at Riven, pulling his eyelid down. “A giant bird who isn’t loved is still just a giant bird. Brimel or whatever-you can be amazing, but you’re still unloved. Even if you’re one of the Four Calamities, nothing changes. I’m calling you Big Bird. Big. Dumb. Bird.”
Snowball wasn’t afraid anymore. Before, he’d been scared because Annelise hadn’t bonded Riven yet. Now that she had, Riven couldn’t hurt him-Annelise would stop him.
But Riven still looked at Snowball the same way-as if he were a kid-and then offered a faint smile. “You’re right. Everything you said is right.”
Both Annelise and Snowball went speechless.
That soft smile stabbed straight into Annelise’s heart, leaving an ache she couldn’t explain. She didn’t know where the feeling came from.
She tapped Snowball on the head. “Enough. That’s one sentence too many. Keep going, and he really might roast you.”
Snowball’s pair of white wolf ears popped up from her smack. He mumbled, clearly unhappy, “Annelise, why are you siding with him? Your four mates definitely don’t like him.”
“I’m not siding with him. I’m saying you really need to get going.”
Snowball was an Arctic wolf with strong spirit energy, so Annelise wasn’t worried about him catching smallpox. And he was already 18-long past being a cub. It was just… how did this kid become so dramatic and so sharp-tongued?
Back when she was still in her home world, she’d buried herself in medicine and academics. She hadn’t even watched many dramas. So where did he pick up this attitude?
Snowball’s wolf ears twitched as he switched to coaxing her. “Annelise, rub my head. Just rub it once, and I’ll go. Just once-please?”
