Chapter 180 Feverish Evan
“Are you infected with smallpox?!”
Back when the High Priest came by, no one had disinfected anything, and Evan had been in contact with him.
Annelise dragged Evan onto the bed and yanked his shirt straight up.
His waist and stomach were lean with no real muscle, but his skin was tight and smooth.
“No rash… we’ll watch for three days. Hopefully, it’s just a regular cold.”
Evan grabbed her hand and said, “Ms. Crawford, I’m really fine. But if I do have smallpox, you should all stay away. I don’t want to pass it on.
“Just stick me in the third room. It’s selfish of me to take up one of the only spare rooms you’ve got right now.
“What the hell are you even talking about? You’re not taking up anything. You can sleep in any room you want.
“But either way, you’re drinking medicine.”
Annelise told Hudson to go boil the new batch of herbs until the water turned yellow-green.
Didn’t matter if it was smallpox or not. Evan needed to boost his system.
Rokky volunteered on the spot and offered to carry Evan to the third room.
But Evan kept insisting he could walk just fine.
Once they got to that third room, Evan sat on the bed wrapped in a blanket and stared ou window. It felt exactly like the past.
His hands clutched the blanket tighter.
Back then, it was because he hadn’t bonded with Annelise. Now, it was because he was too weak.
“Why… why did I have to be born a peacock? Just some ornamental shifter?
“If I were a predator-type shifter, I could’ve helped Ms. Crawford. I wouldn’t be this useless.”
He punched the edge of the bed and muttered through gritted teeth. “D*mn it.”
A faint shadow of dark energy shimmered around him.
Hudson peeked into the room. He clenched his shirt in both hands, unsure whether or not he should tell Annelise.
After hesitating for a while, he finally made his way over.
“Ms. Crawford, um… Evan…”
“What about him?”
“A few days ago… I don’t know what was going on in his head. After Adrian smashed the house, we all had to squeeze into the same bed at night.”
“My fur’s huge now. It’s super warm. But Evan just gave me his egg and sat by the front door alone.
“That corner’s freezing. The wind comes in from everywhere. I think he caught a chill. It’s probably not smallpox.”
Annelise picked up on it immediately.
This wasn’t about the fever. It was about whatever was going on inside Evan’s head.
“Alright, I hear you. Once all this is over, I’ll talk to him.”
Just then, the High Priest came back, leading a few cows.
“Sweetheart! Come quick! I brought the cows you were asking about! The ones with pay
This time, he didn’t dare come into the yard.
He stood outside and shouted for her.
Annelise ran out and instantly spotted the red spots all over the cows.
