Chapter 19 Taming the Wild
Annelise thought, D*mn, one swing of my rock wasn’t even enough for you.

“You’ve got proof it was him who hurt you? Who knows what really happened? Maybe you just fell on the way up the mountain.”
“My… My mates can vouch for me.”
The dark–furred and brown–furred shifters all nodded.
Trying to play that game with me, someone from another world? Cute, Annelise thought.
“They’re your mates, of course they’ll back you up. My mates? I can make them do anything, and they actually do it. Does that mean anything?”
She turned to Hudson. “Little fox, am I the best in the world?”
Hudson nodded without hesitation. “Yes, absolutely.”
Annelise gave the others a confident nod. See? Love makes people gullible.
“You all know me–my nature, my character–so if your mates testify, does that really count?”
Then she continued, her tone sharp and deliberate, “The chief’s original plan was to hunt Rokky. The whole point of the hunt was to stop him from hurting anyone in the tribe when he lost control.
“Why did he go berserk? Because for so many years, no one could bond with him. That’s why he went wild.
“Well, I bonded with him. Don’t worry about how it happened–anyone can just sniff him and immediately know. Problem solved.”
She slammed her hands down for emphasis.
“Now that the problem is taken care of, why worry about him going berserk? Why hunt him at
all?”
“Well…”
Clara had no answer. Even the other females and males nearby had to admit it made sense.
Good. That’s exactly the point, Annelise thought.

In the world where she came from, this would be twisting logic. But in the shifter world, in front of a crowd of not–so–bright shifters, it was a masterstroke of persuasion.
The chief finally said, “Maybe it’s your spirit energy, Annelise, that just happens to match his.
“Anyway, the crisis is over. Everyone can go hunting in the mountains again without fear. But you need to stay vigilant. He’s under your care now, so whatever happens, it’s your responsibility.”
Annelise patted her chest. “Of course. He’s my mate, and I’m responsible.”
Clara opened her mouth to argue, but the chief patted her shoulder and shook her head, signaling her to drop it.
For now, that was settled.
Annelise couldn’t resist a little self–promotion. “If anyone feels weak or groggy from snake venom, come to me. I have the antidote.”
Then she grabbed Rokky and tugged the fox along as they walked forward.
Adrian was left behind, standing there in stunned silence.
Another mate? She actually made the strongest one a mate too?
Waving his hand, he called out, “Hey, Annelise! Why aren’t you holding my hand? Seriously!”
He ran after her, shouting, “Wait for me! Wait for me!”
Annelise wanted to, but she only had two hands. And she knew the rabbit would catch up.
Back at home, she faced a new problem. Four mates crammed into a small house.
Fine, at least one could share a bed with her. But the other three all in one room? That was way too crowded.
Time to repair that half–broken room.
“Everyone, meet my new mate. He’s older than us–all of forty. I call him Rokky.”
In the shifter world, anyone under a hundred wasn’t considered old. Still, Rokky’s cheeks flushed bright red. He was the oldest here and felt awkward about it.
“Um, Rokky will sleep with me tonight. He’s hurt, and I’ll treat his injuries, so I won’t go back to that room. You three get proper rest tonight–everyone’s been up all night, so you can sleep in

a bit tomorrow.”

Annelise also remembered the stash of dead ducks and chickens at home and planned to give one to Rokky for nourishment.
Rokky’s embarrassment deepened.
“N–No need… Ms. Crawford, I’m fine outside. I’ve slept in the wild all these years–it doesn’t
matter.”
He still felt like he was dreaming. After all these years, he’d gone from wanting to live to losing all clarity, wishing for death. He never imagined having a matriarch, let alone being treated like a true mate and brought into a home.
Even now, he couldn’t believe Annelise could actually care for him.
She tossed him a dead chicken.
“Eat it. Honestly, you scared them to death. We only picked them up. It’s all thanks to you.”
“I… I’m really not hungry,” Rokky protested.
Annelise handed him some herbs to improve circulation and heal bruising. She sat on a small stone bench in the yard, checking for internal injuries.
Though the rain had dropped the temperature, the air was fresh, thick with the smell of wet earth.
Adrian, watching Annelise speak with the new shifter, tugged Hudson aside.
