But that didn’t make sense either. No one would keep a shifter who had lost control. If anyone had managed to claim him, she never would’ve run into him in the mountains to begin with.

“Strange…” she muttered. “Those wooden spikes I used on Clara’s shifters all snapped. If I’m going to poke around your head to check what’s behind your memory loss, I’ll need to carve new ones. And I still have to fix the house. Whatever–one thing at a time. It’s getting colder. The house comes first.”

She pushed open the door–and the smell of food hit her like a warm hug.

Hudson marched over proudly with a bowl in his hands. “Ms. Crawford! I tried making cooked food the way you showed me last time. I peeled the stinky wild greens, mixed them with another kind, and roasted everything together. It smells amazing.”

It really did. She didn’t even need to taste it.

Her little fox was wandering further and further down the path of culinary discovery—and she loved it.

She reached out, ready to rub Hudson’s red fox ears. He froze for a second, then said, “Wait a moment, Ms. Crawford.”

He turned around, placed a fist over his chest, and a moment later, his bright red fox ears and fluffy tail appeared.

Hudson no longer feared her pulling his fur.

He gave his ears a little shake, smoothed the fur neatly with his hands, and bent down slightly so she could reach.

“Okay,” he said.

“Mm. Good boy. Tonight you’re sleeping with me. I want to hold your fox tail while I sleep.”

Hudson’s tail wagged wildly behind him.

He rubbed his hands together, wanting to ask if that meant they could mate tonight.

But with Rokky standing right there, he couldn’t bring himself to ask.

Worse, he worried the matriarch might have already mated with Rokky last night. If she did, and then mated with him tonight… what if she wore herself out?

So he only nodded, keeping his thoughts to himself.

Only Adrian with his dark under–eye circles–knew that nothing had happened between Annelise and Rokky last night.

He’d spent half the night crouched at the window, freezing in the wind, spying on them.

He’d wanted to scoff. “Hmph, big deal. You’re all just sleeping next to her. It’s not mating. She won’t get pregnant.”

But then he remembered–he didn’t even get to sleep beside her.

Poor him. He wanted her to pet his rabbit ears too, but he had no excuse to go over.

Annelise glanced sideways at him. The rabbit was silently beating his chest in frustration.

She smirked.

After breakfast, she dragged Rokky along to visit Evan.

Not to show him off, not to rub anything in.

She leaned close to Rokky and teased, “Our home has a poultry shifter. So, Rokky, no matter how hungry you get, don’t eat him.”

Rokky waved both hands frantically. “No, no! I know I lost my memories, but I promise—I’ve never eaten a shifter.”

Evan’s heart finally settled once he saw that Annelise was truly safe.

Last night, Adrian hadn’t been the only one unable to sleep.

Even though Evan heard she came back and Adrian told him she was fine, Hudson had said she came home covered in mud–as if she’d been rolling around the forest.

He had stayed awake all night, no matter how exhausted he was.

Rokky looked at him. “Ms. Crawford, is he also your mate? I don’t smell any bond scent on him…”

Annelise cut in quickly. “No. He’s not my mate. He’s just recovering here.”

Rokky nodded immediately. Since she didn’t explain further, he knew not to ask.

But Evan’s heart clenched tight at those words.
