Chapter 52 A Plan

“Rokky!”

“I-it’s okay… shifter bodies don’t break that easy…”

Anneliese spun around and turned her back to him. She wiped his blood off her hands and smeared it right across her forehead.

In the chaos, she suddenly screamed, “Ah! I’m bleeding! It hurts! My head’s bleeding!”

Rokky froze.

He flipped her over fast. Her face was soaked in red.

“Ms. Crawford!”

“Rokky, they kicked me in the head! You can’t just stand there and take it anymore! That won’t protect me!”

Her face looked awful.

Blood streaked her skin from temple to chin.

Rokky had lost too much blood.

What hit her was his, but she’d spread it over her face so it looked like her head had split open.

His eyes stretched wide. His jaw slackened.

Anneliese pushed harder. “Rokky, just look at me! This is what happens when you keep holding back! You can’t protect me!

It hurts so bad! My head’s killing me!”

She rubbed at her eyes until they turned red and puffy, like she was ready to cry.

Rokky’s hands started to tremble. His eyes burned red.

“They… they…”

Right. He’d kept it all in to protect her. And now she looked like this.

The tan guy aimed another kick, but Rokky caught his ankle right in midair.

His hand looked thin, but it locked tight. The guy couldn’t budge.

The shifter scoffed. “What? You wanna fight back now?”

One of the others laughed. “He really thinks he can fight? If he scratches us, they’ll kick her out of the trials forever! Probably exile both of them! Their whole family!”

Rokky was breathing heavily. His lip turned ghost-white from how hard he bit down.

He couldn’t hear them anymore. All he saw was her face, drenched in blood.

Then his claws shot out. Long, razor-sharp talons slashed straight through the shifter’s ankle.

A gut-wrenching scream exploded into the air. Birds burst out of the trees and scattered.

The other three stopped dead.

They backed away fast, panic all over their faces. No one dared to step in. Clara’s mate dropped to the ground, holding his leg, howling in pain.

None of them had seen claws like that. One swipe, and it tore through solid bone.

The tan one screamed, “I’ll report this! That thing just attacked one of us! You’re both screwed! Just wait!”

Rokky didn’t even look at him. He scooped Anneliese into his arms and held her tight. His eyes scanned the area. When he spotted a quiet spot behind a massive boulder, he moved fast. He sat her down gently, using his body to shield her.

“Ms. Crawford, let me see. Where does it hurt? There’s so much blood!”

She opened her mouth to say she was fine. That the blood was fake. That she just needed him

to snap.

But Rokky gasped. “There’s a cut on your forehead!”

She reached up. It was tiny. Probably just a scrape from earlier.

Rokky brushed her bangs away with shaky fingers.

He blew on the wound like he was trying to take the pain away.

His face was full of worry. His eyes looked heartbroken.

“No pain. No pain. The pain’s gone. You’re okay. You’re gonna be okay…”

His voice was raspy, but he sounded like he was calming a scared child. He moved with that same kind of softness too.

The red faded from his eyes. They turned back to black.

Anneliese stared at him, stunned. She didn’t know what to feel anymore.

Was this how an older brother cared for a sister? Or maybe how a parent acted?

Or was it something else?

She couldn’t stop herself from asking, “Rokky… have you ever had kids?”

Rokky shook his head. “I’ve lost a lot of memories, but I know this. I’ve never been bonded to anyone. So no. I’ve never had kids.”

Anneliese let out a small, “Oh.” Yeah, that tracked. In this world, you bonded first, then mated, then had kids.

But if that was true, then where had he learned to be like this? He brought her water when she woke up. He helped her sit and drink. He even dressed her. He never rushed her. He handled her like she might break.

And today, he was comforting her like she was some scared little girl. But he didn’t grow up with a family. He’d gone wild out there. No tribe would’ve taken him in.

Something didn’t fit. It felt like a whole part of him was just… gone.

While she was thinking, she noticed blood soaking into the stone behind him. She grabbed him and yanked. “Rokky! Let me see your wounds!”

“I’m fine. It’ll heal soon…”

She climbed up onto a rock and leaned in to check.

She gently moved his long black hair aside. His whole scalp was matted with blood. The wound was closing, but it was still there.

She tugged his shirt off his shoulder. His skin was pale, but not sickly.

His back was bruised all over, fading into blotchy patches. Right in the middle, there was a deep gash. That one was still bleeding. And it wasn’t healing fast at all.
