“If I’d bonded with another matriarch at 25 and lived a normal male life, my cub would’ve only been a few years younger than you. I would’ve been old enough to be your uncle or
something…” Rokky trailed off, guilt gnawing at him.
For reasons he couldn’t explain, the idea of being an elder figure to Annelise made his stomach twist. He hated it.
Annelise ignored the back half of his rambling entirely and requested, “Say it again. What did you just call me?”
“M-Ms. Crawford, sweetie…”
Her eyes curved into crescents. “It sounds adorable.”
It wasn’t just the words themselves-he said them with his head lowered, his fringe concealing part of his face. The subtle purse of his lips before he spoke, the way his voice softened with bashfulness… it all made him painfully, unexpectedly cute.
She snapped her fingers and strode ahead. “Rokky, you can call me anything you want. Just remember-I’m not a kid. You can’t treat me like one. You have to see me as a grown woman.”
Rokky froze for a beat, startled.
His heart raced faster, heat climbing to his face-but not the kind that came from desire. It was something lighter, stranger, unshaped, a flutter he didn’t understand at all.
…
They soon returned to the spot where the attack had happened earlier. Three male shifters were crouched around Brownhide, inspecting his injured ankle,
“You’re useless like this,” one of them said. “You can’t hunt, can’t help your matriarch. Better to have someone escort you out of the mountains.”
Brownhide slammed a fist into the dirt. “No! Ms. Winslow went deeper into the mountains—I can’t leave now! If I do, not only will Ms. Winslow be mocked, but even the chief would be a laughingstock.”
“But you can’t even walk,” another said.
“Tie it up then! I’ll use a branch as a crutch if I have to. I’m getting to her side no matter what!”

Annelise laughed under her breath, stepping into the conversation casually. “If you show up like that, Clara will blow a gasket. Especially once she hears your ankle got wrecked because of me and my mate.”
At the sight of Annelise and Rokky-especially Rokky, Brownhide shuddered violently, fury snapping into place like a cornered animal. He snarled, “You have some nerve coming back. You two should be the ones dragged out of these mountains!”
At that, Annelise lunged without warning, driving three needles straight into his wound.
The pain hit like a bolt of lightning. Brownhide gasped, mouth flying open-but this time, before a sound could escape, Annelise shoved a pill past his lips and clamped his mouth shut with her palm.
Sweat streamed down his temples as he clenched his fists so hard that his knuckles cracked white.
The other three males tried to move-only for Rokky to explode from the shadows behind them. One strike, one pin, one blur of claws. By the time Rokky reappeared in front of Annelise, all three men were carved front and back, faces included-crisscrossed in deep claw marks.
“Ahhh!” one croaked.
“Ugh… Annelise, you… You really want to get kicked out of the tribe?!”
Rokky caught Annelise’s glance instantly. He stepped into the center, eyes blazing red, beast aura roaring outward like a storm unleashed. The three male shifters dropped to their knees immediately. The hierarchy between high-level shifter and common shifter became brutally, gloriously obvious.
With them immobilized, Annelise fed each of them a pill, then pointed at Brownhide. “Sniff him. Does he carry Rokky’s scent? Does he have Rokky’s claw marks on his ankle? No? Then congrats. No evidence.”
The three shifters wrinkled their noses and sniffed seriously.
Meanwhile, Annelise hefted a rock and brought it down hard on the first man’s head. “This is for hitting Rokky with arock! Hit Rokky again, I dare you! You think twice now?! You just gotta lay a hand on him, huh?”
“And you!” She swung around and smashed the second across the face until his nose turned bloody. “You kicked Rokky the hardest, right? I swear I’ll have your legs snapped clean one day!”

Of course, she didn’t spare the third shifter, using the rock’ to bash his jaw, causing his teeth to scatter like pebbles. “You too! Not only did you hit him with a rock, but you even booted him. How do you like this now?!”
After dozens of strikes, she hurled the rock straight onto Brownhide’s injured ankle. The man convulsed with agony, shaking violently. “Aaaaahh!”
Annelise sneered. “No scent. No claw marks. Try pinning it on him now.”
Brownhide wheezed, glaring daggers at her. “You… you! You’ll eventually be caught!”
She dragged Rokky along and waved a hand without looking back. “Eventually? Huh! This is me. What are you gonna do about it? If you’ve got a way to deal with me, do it. If not, suck it up!”
When they reached deeper into the back mountains, Annelise asked, “Rokky, how do you feel?”
“I guess… that I could fight back if it meant protecting you. That’s what you wanted me to learn?”
“Oh, you can fight back whether I’m around or not! I did all this for you! So you’d stop taking hits from everyone else.”
“For me?”
For the first time, his heart didn’t just race-his body reacted too, desire sparking low and undeniable.
