Evan’s hand twitched for a second, but he still pressed the medicine back onto Annelise’s wound. “Even mates have their own races. Like carnivorous mates-their heat cycles hit harder, but it’s always the matriarch who calls the shots. If he’s not in heat, the drive isn’t that strong. And if the matriarch doesn’t agree, no matter how much the mate tries to put out his scent, it won’t matter. Even if he goes halfway, he can shut it down.”

Then Evan scooped her up around the waist. Just held her there, solid and steady, and it made her a little startled. She feared slipping, so her hands shot up to circle his neck.

“Can you really hold me?” Annelise asked, a little unsure in her chest.

Evan couldn’t help it. He bent down and kissed Annelise, really using his mouth to shut her up.

Annelise gasped, breathing in nothing but the scent of orchids.
