This is great. The female doesn’t have to go through the strain of pregnancy. It also fits perfectly with the bodies of females and males in the shifter world. After all, males have a heat cycle. If females carried a cub for ten months and the male had to raise it, the other mates might go years without hitting a heat cycle, without getting their own cubs. The population would shrink fast. A little while later, there was a sudden knock at the door.

This was after Annelise had already taught her mate to always knock before coming in.

She and Evan exchanged a glance. “Who is it?”

Evan pulled the blanket up over Annelise a bit and said, “Come in.”

Adrian couldn’t wait and practically burst in. He scrunched his nose, sniffed for a moment, and then exclaimed, “Ahhh, you two did it!”

Alright, even though I’ve been feeling off since yesterday morning and could smell a hint of orchids outside, seeing it for real still hits me right in the gut.

Annelise rolled her eyes. “I told you the night before last, I’m not into Snowball. And you still asked if we could… copulate. I made myself perfectly clear. Was that just for nothing?”

“You weren’t wrong, it’s just me who can’t handle it,” Adrian said.

The room went quiet all of a sudden. Adrian’s words left Annelise speechless.

“Then what are you even doing here?” she asked.

Gotta admit, I’m kinda embarrassed. I’m not really dressed yet. If he’s got something to say, at least wait until I’m out first.

Adrian looked utterly defeated. He took a deep breath and said, “I know I am not working anymore, but my body feels awful. I mean, it really does. It is just that… when I found out Evan was using that orchid scent to tempt you, my body started heating up.”

Annelise nodded, “Oh. You are jealous of Evan.”

“I am not!” Adrian walked over, his knees suddenly giving out as he dropped into a crouch by the bed. It was not a broad, braced stance. His legs were pressed together, tilted awkwardly to

one side.

“What are you doing now?”

“Ms. Crawford, please save me,” Adrian said, sounding desperate. “I am going to burst if this keeps up.”

He tried to explain that even if he was not functioning, his body was still reacting. His chest felt hot. His heart was racing like it was about to leap out of him. Everything felt blocked, though. His head was restless and irritated, while his body below stayed frustratingly cold.

“This hot and cold torture is killing me,” Adrian went on. “Ms. Crawford, just take a look at me. Please, help me feel a little better. Just a little. If you do, I swear I will behave. I will do anything you say.”

Annelise was utterly speechless. She told Adrian to step outside first while she got dressed, then she would come out.

Adrian sulked and complained, “What is the point of getting dressed? Once we turn into beast form, we are naked anyway. Besides, I am your mate. Seeing each other is no big deal. Who knows, after you turn twenty-five and get your beast form, you might even rub backs with me, scratch each other.”

Annelise raised an eyebrow. She imagined it for a second, rubbing backs with a big, chubby rabbit. Not a human form, but a massive, fluffy lop rabbit. The image alone somehow drained the fatigue from her.

“Alright, go outside. I will treat it once we are out,” she said, then asked Adrian how Rokky’s injury was doing..

Adrian pushed himself up, completely dejected. “What injury could he possibly have. After your treatment, he is not even bleeding anymore. He is just lying there, perfectly fine. Last night, you two were so loud, and he slept like a baby. Deeply. The whole night.”

He sighed dramatically. “I was the only one. Just me. Listening to everything all night. Nearly should drove me insane. Now I am the one who is not okay. You have to treat me. Maybe you take a look and figure out what exactly is wrong.”

As he spoke, he moved toward Annelise and reached for his pants, clearly about to pull them down.

Annelise shot her hand out at once. “Stop. Right there.”

Adrian pouted. His mouth was flattening as he kept going, clearly aggrieved. He said that there were, in fact, rabbit shifters in his tribe who were so badly frightened that they ended up incapable of bonding for life.

Annelise pinched the bridge of her nose. “Stop. This is barely anything yet. Do not start acting dramatically. Get out.”

She shot Evan a look. Evan stood up immediately and started pushing Adrian toward the door.

As he was being marched out, Adrian kept talking. “What does dramatic even mean? What is that supposed to mean… hey, Evan, stop pushing me. You are seriously taking advantage of this. If I were not out of commission, and if Rokky were not injured, there is no way you would be first in line.”

When Evan returned, he resumed pressing gently against Annelise’s waist.

Annelise stayed inside like that until noon. When she finally stepped out, she saw Hudson hurrying back.

“Little fox, where did you run off to?” Annelise called out.

Hudson immediately let out a small ‘uh’ as a fox tail and fox ears popped out. His body was stiff with discomfort.

Honestly, once the little fox knows I am not going to hit anyone anymore, he happily accepts the nickname. His ears and tail show themselves all the time now. He should no longer react like this. It is strange. What is going on?
